Hey guys,
made a nice 10 sec delay last night but had a quite hard opening.
Have a troll 265 MDV, mesh slider and 36 ZP vented PC.
Any clue what I could do to get a softer opening?

What are you doing with the nose?

Are you using direct control of the slider?

Tightening up the direct control can greatly soften the opening. So can rolling the nose (but do so symmetrically, as Leroy points out).

Large or small mesh?

I heard last summer in Norway that people were putting tailgate on slider up jumps to avoid line over i was thinking if that helps making openings more consistant,what is the downside of that action?

What about eating just salad for next few years?

Was a large mesh. I'm gonna try a sail slider for next jump and we'll see.

Don't use a sail slider of that big A. go with the mesh again.

As the Pilot chute stops the canopy pulls it out of the container, the slider needs to come with it. since there is no bag to keep the slider up at the top, that has to be done with rubberbands.

The primary stow should be double stowed as close to the slider as possible. If the rubberband is a couple inches down, the slider is affectively a couple inches down before reaching line stretch so take care with the primary stow (indirect slider control).

Direct slider control can be used as well. One or two half mini rubberbands can be used. One on each inner C line, or just one, and can be wrapped several times.

If the canopy opens inherently hard at long delays, then roll the nose inward a few times and hide the center.

Again, I would not suggest using a sail slider off a 1700 footer with guy wires though.

Try a 32" P.C. I've been wacked hard by 36's at terminal.

Besides trying the upboard advice, an occasional slammer is a fact of life when dealing with parachutes in any configuration . . .

I was going to make the same suggestion. It's not quite the same, but I got whacked using a 38" at terminal last summer. Consistently good results with a 32", though.

That was me...

I've been using a small mesh slider with a tailgate for a while now, mainly to prevent a line over. I would wrap the tailgate band as tight as I could get it for the terminal jumps.

I think maybe the downside would be that during deployment the tailgate would hold the tail down even further than the brake setting, which actually could INCREASE the speed of the opening as less air can vent out through the tail. This is an effect we've noticed on the canopies with 5 upper control lines on terminal jumps.

This year I'll be taking the 5th upper off, using a double layer small mesh slider, still using the tailgate, and downsizing the p/c to a 34 or a 32, either F-111 or vented zp (no straight zp for me!) This is the configuration I plan for TERMINAL JUMPS ONLY.

I don't recommend this to anyone. I'm test jumping it personally because I'm like that.

Could you please explain how to double stow the primary stow ? and also for the direct slider control how are you attaching the rubber bands to the inner C lines ( larkshead, fingertrap) ? Thank you for your help.

The primary stow is the primary stow at the bottom of the tail pocket. Simply grab a bite of lines as normal and take 2 wraps of the rubberband. It's standard operating procedure. If you're using a slider on long delays, just make sure the biti is very close to the slider.

Also standard Ops is to larks head a tailgate rubber band to the C-line at the line attachment point. Some people like to use one on each inner C-line, some only use one. Some use none. So take your pick.

Look at page 25 and page 29 of this Manual for an explanation.

OK, made some tests last night.
Seems the sail slider could induce off heading openings.
Rolling the nose, double wrapping the rubber bands helps to soften.
I'll go back to mesh slider, use a 32" PC and roll/wrap more.

What did you do in this jump? Did you track? You get harder openings on this delay if you pull in tracking or not stopping enough the track. If the object allows, you can try by not tracking at all.

I always roll the nose as small I can. But I keep the center nose open (at these sub-terminal delays, at terminal, the nose is hidden and only a small part is looking outside), real real tight direct control and indirect control to help keeping the lines in place while packing (Note that I don't have vents on my canopies)

I pulled while finishing my tracking so I'm sure it didn't help.
The objects definitely allows falling without tracking but it's so cool to track there :)
I'm just a beginner so I'm learning and it's the right place to do so.
