Hi all,

If I make a container from an old back pack
make a small chute , probably 60 sqr feet or so
Pilot chute... maybe similar size???? lol
and jump from a 30 or so foot bridge or cliff into water
and I'm able to get the main to come out of the container and inflate will this be classed as a base jump ?

and if so, if I can do this off a cliff, a bridge, a building and a antenna will this all be classed as a proper BASE ?

Don't mean to be rude or anything but I just don't get this ? My only comment on this would be "Why ?" and even if it would be classed as "proper base" I would still ask "So what ?". I mean what would you possibly benefit from that or why would you want to do it ? To get yourself a base number and brag about it to your friends or score some chicks at the bar ? I mean what's the point really in stuff like that ? I'd say that get your skydives, do your homework and if you still want to get into base, then get into base and then you might just see what it's all about...

And from my point of view... It's not about base numbers or chicks at the bar... :D

There is a thing called sleep at night factor.

If you are comfortable calling yourself a BASE jumper by doing what you propose, then go for it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with doing the "jumps" you are doing. Many people will say it is a waste of time. I think it is time better spent than sitting on here writing crap to strangers (like I am now ). I have done those jumps off a building, span, and earth. Do I count them as BASE jumps? Yes and No. I personally would not credit them towards my BASE number though (if I ever wanted to apply for one).

So you do whatever makes you happy. And as long as you do not adversely affect another persons life, it is OK!!

I notice you're a scuba diver, dive master....

If I go swimming and hold my head under water can I count that as a scuba dive? Would it help if I took a ballon and took a couple of breaths of air from it?

I agree with space, if it won't kill you with out your set up, then it's not a base jump.

This reminds me of when a couple of buddies and I tried to make a make shift hang glider and jump from a 45' bridge to see if we could "sort of" glide into the water.
Not the brightest thing to do but who cares if you have fun!

Actually, I think you might want to get a couple of empty 3-liter coke bottles and duct-tape them to your camelbak...

if this dude uses the same combo for the rest of his jumps (B.A. & E.) I'd give him the freaking #.... Hell..... I'd give him MY #.

How do you guys feel about Ground Launching off of BASE objects? I know it's not a BASE jump, and thus wouldn't log it as one. But I'm interesting in pursuing a Ground Launching BASE number. Es and Bs shouldn't be too difficult to do and I know of at least two As which could likely be launched off of. But the S will be a little trickier without building a platform or jumping a span with little to no rail.

You could launch from the top of a suspension tower pretty easily.

LOL, I'm not that kind of person I do things for my self, besides very few people on this earth would even know what a base number is , probably for every thousend that know what BASE is probably only 1 knows what a base number is .


Nah cant do that, can no longer skydive, my hips are relly bad, after a few K$ in scans and xrays, still not sure what it is , I havn't been back to my specialist since my last scans so I may find out very soon.
if skydiving and base never used leg straps id be fine, but without leg straps.... lol.
so yeah this back pack wont have leg straps lol
I'm just really curious as to weather I can get it to deploy in under 10 metres, was thinking of maybe using a very large pilot chute and holding it open above my head and jumping and have it deploy the main chute but have the main be about the same size of a normal pilot chute.
any oppinions on what the best configuration would be ?




YES, of course its a scuba dive, this is how I started off when I was 5ish, I recommend you put a bucket over ya head, get someone to stand and float on the bucket and ya should be able to stay atleast 5 feet under the water for atleast a few minutes.

also as someone said,
its possible to jump off a 220 foot and hit water and survive without any planned landing style you'll have a 1 in 34 chance.
so say ya have a total malfunction and ya hit the water and survive and sustaine injurys are these injurys really from a base jump ?
seeing as though the parachute never deployed but you didnt die ?

How about a tandem drouge instead?

Until today, I always was sure I carry my canopy on my back to safe my life. And w/o it, I cannot survive a skydive. If I do not survive it w/o a PC, it was no BASE?
I feel a little confused. But I'm a beginner. So what...

jumping whith out a parachute you´ll die even if you make the low jumps(atleast if you do it over hard ground)

Jumping whith out a pilot chute on a packed rig is generral a bad idea even if you SL the object.
Jumping D-bag,TARD and mcconkey i guess you dont want the Pilot chute(never done thouse jumps yet)

BASE jump would be a jump whith a packed rig on your bag,from an altitude were the canopy can open in time to save your life.(i Once saw Nick tell it correct,NICK step forward and correct me)

Hi Christel,
Maybe this will help an understanding. If you jumped from a balloon with a gummieseil while wearing a parachute, it would not be a skydive. if you let the bungy land you safely. The parachute would only be cosmetic for photo or ego.

Extreme low level Safe*er* BASE.

main rules so far are.
1. must make own rig.
2. chute, container, etc etc all parts contructrion cost must come under $100
3. must have a parachute, if its in a rig you must make an attempt to deploy it.
4. no jumps over 30 metres
5. all jumps over 20 metres must be made over water.

I'll give an Ipod to the 100th video made (after today) of this sport

dude - take up (platform) diving. it's not any kind of BASE if the rig is there for decoration - why bother making one (ie, a rig).

HA! funny story:
"my "first" BASE jump"
I was 14 years old, 2 years before my first skydive, and 3 years before my first base jump, and i was very into climbing. Me and a freind of mine had a highline set up over a valley (about 150' off the deck) just zipping back and forth. We had been building simple parachutes out of tarps, with the 4 corners tied to long lines, orignaly to slow us down on a bike (cut me a break, i was 14). and we got the great idea to tie one to our climbing harness and cut away from the line.

We put a bit more thought into it (5 or 10 minutes) and decided we neede more than a 15 by 18 foot tarp. so we went to ACE hardware and bought a 30 by 20 foot super duty polyurethane tarp. and tied -6- lines, each 40 feet long to the corners and middle of longer sides.

that evening, I slid out to the center of the highline tyrolean, duct taped to apex of my 'canopy' to the high line,(read:static line TARD or Direct bag), slid another 20 feet out away from the 'canopy' and tied into the lines. Wind was about 15 MPH, right down the valley (a 4 to 1 slope downhill). I waved at my freind, on the ground 150 feet below, looked at my parachute waving 45 degrees in the wind and pulled myself up to unhook from the line. (to this day on a base jump i still wait 5 minutes at an Exit, 'I was 14')

Now, the scary thing about this is how well it worked the first time. My freefall was about 70 feet, and the tarp opened beautifuly, off to the downwind side, and i swung underneath it. Canopy ride must have been 5 or 6 seconds, and i tumbled through the grass, and into a creek. Got up and screamed!

Next day, wind was about 35mph, my freind got out on the line with our parachute. and set it up the same way, as he was unhooking from the highline, the Duct tape broke on the apex of the parachute, and the thing opened takeing him with it. He ended up about 300 yards away in a tree with a broken arm and a torn parachute.

I wish i could say it was the stupidest thing i have ever done, but I cant. I think it is the 3rd (Taking a homemade hangglider off a 1300' launch is the first, but i have Video of that one, the 2nd i keep to myself) but those are stories for other colums. I realized only after starting BASE how lucky we really were that day. shit that was low. I want to go set up that highline again and do a PCA with my Dagger/warlock for old times sake. well, i guess it only was 5 years ago.
