So you want to get into base?
Getting into base is pretty easy these days but it is not all fun. Do a search on the movie; 'renes_ongeluk' on skydivingmovies.com and think it all over again.

Holy Sheep Shit Batman!!! That was U-G-L-Y!!
A few questions for my personal knowledge. Was it a vented canopy? Did the canopy stay reasonably inflated while the nose was against the concrete? It looks like a slider up, was it?? Aprox. how many twists?? Too many to reach above the twists?
And finally is he OK?!?!?!?! He sounded quite hurt but I hope that was just the wind knocked out!?! My best wishes for a speedy recovery for the jumper!!!
Shortcut
Re: [SabreDave] So you want to get into base?
Well, after the impact the canopy was vented. Before that it was a ACE 240.The jump was slider up and the girlish sounds were real as for the several broken bones.(nose shoulder back ellbow and foot).Scared the shit out of me that a impact on half brakes is like that.do

Re: [renebrugging] So you want to get into base?
Wow!! That's intense!! I am glad you are recovering well and getting back in the air! Thank you for answering those questions.
As for the girlish sounds............my friends will gladly give you a demo of what I sound like just climbing over the railingWink
No dams where I am, the only dam I have jumped was in Switzerland but not that one. It was probably my scariest jump yet or = to my first anyway.
Be well..................

Godverdomme, kaaskoppie!! Shocked

I like your description of the video : "i broke a couple off bones but rest pretty ok"

Get better soon so I can come visit you and Ferry. Smile

Rene, is that the horrible dutchman that was with Ferry in LB at Easter? Mate, sorry to hear that you have busted yourself. Get better. I will be back in the valley for a couple of weeks end Mar/early April. Hopefully you'll be back on your feet and jumping. Play safe, Neil :-)

Re: [renebrugging] So you want to get into base?
I have some questions for you, part of a slowly developing hypothesis.

What is your weight? Height? Body fat composition? What armor were you wearing at the time?

More questions but not related to the above:

Were you jumping slider up in deep brakes? That looked like around a 3 second delay. What corrective actions did you take on opening? Do you think it would have been better to take three seconds slider down rather than risk the more unpredictable heading results of a short slider up delay there?

Glad you're healing. Thanks for the video, that's good for prospective young BASE jumpers to see.
Shortcut
Re: [DexterBase] So you want to get into base?
Wingload with that canopy was 0.78.I used shallow breaksetting which i prefer in a "no twist situation".I have almost 500 basejumps and cleared several 180s.Twist was high with slider entangled in it.As for my not so long arms and the small amount of time it totally surprised me.As you see I managed to clear one but not chance to turn for me.I was wearing both ellbow and knee protection and a helmet off course! And hell yes its stupid to make subterminal delays like that.I made couple off 4sec slider down jumps and they are way more safe!
Shortcut
Re: [renebrugging] So you want to get into base?
I'm not implying that you made a stupid decision. Hell, I've made more than my share of... less than wise decisions.

We all think about what we're going to do if we open with linetwists. If the twist is high, your options are prett much shit with that proximity to the object.

Would you care to post your height and weight? You can PM me if you like.

Give him time. He'll answer.

Edit: My choice would have been shallow brakes, indirect control only, 42" AV pilot chute, 4 second delay. After considering the object delay requirements, I would have likely opted to jump slider down.

Why shallow brakes? I thought you should always use deep brakes when jumping E's or B's due to strike possibilities.

surely jumping slider up means you jump a more shallow break setting than Slider down? unless you are doing some lower freefalls slider down with nice landing areas where a shallow break setting is better than the deep setting?

anyone like to comment?

PS) on the thread subject - can you please answer about direct / indirect and PC size?

Re: [pBASEtobe] So you want to get into base?

brake settings are more geared toward whether slider up or slider down due to the distance the control lines travel slider down (Line release mod) compared to slider up - rather than the actual object being jumped..............

there are instances of people jumping slider down with the shallow break setting on lower opening jumps due to the canopy flight and opening height............

besides i would probaly take it slider down in the 3+(but below 4)delay range, slider off ofcoursTongue

A properly configured slider down deep brake setting will often result in opening stall if used for a slider up jump.

Sort of. Essentially, the canopy can't inflate properly, so you either end up with a back sliding opening (better) or a snivel until you pop the toggles (worse--I once had this put me in the hospital). This happens when the brakes are so deep that the canopy can't open enough (or with enough force) to drive the slider down. If you are fast enough to clear the brakes and pump, you can beat this (I've seen an experienced jumper take 3 from a 770' S slider up and have to fight the toggles to get the slider down, but land ok), but if you are low, or you react slow, you can end up snivelling into the ground.

If this doesn't make any sense, I'll come back to it later. I've got the flu, so nothing is making much sense to me right now.

Solid object? Shallow brakes? Slider down? Four seconds?

Care to re-think that?
If your four seconds is realistic, you and your canopy would likely be in pretty rough shape as well. Unsure

I know this is off the subject of the thread so feel free to split this off.

Also, I know the break settings question has been discussed here and on Blinc but I did a search and didn't find my answer, so...

Is it true then that the best setup would be to have four brake settings, two for slider up and two for slider down. In other words you’d have a shallow and a deep setting for SU and a shallow and a deep for SD. You’d have a shallower setting for jumping S’s where object strike isn’t very likely and a deeper setting for the rest where object strike is more likely. Did that make sense? Obviously some of these would be site specific but just as a general rule is this true?

How many brake settings do most people have?

Not really. I said "indirect control only" which refers to using indirect control of the slider. I never said anything in that configuration about leaving the slider down.

??

I apologize if I'm misunderstanding, but that is a quote from your post...

Edit: I think I getcha now...the four second delay...slder up?
...but may have opted for slider down instead?

I'll take three slider down, any day, over four up, from a "solid object"...
Short delay, low speed slider up jumps are too unpredictable for my taste...
Shortcut
Re: [base704] So you want to get into base?
I'm talking about two completely different configurations. After considering the object height, object profile, horizontal seperation on opening, unpredictable heading associated with jumping slider up at that delay range... I'd opt to just do a standard slider down jump.

Edit: Four seconds slider down is definitely not recommended, but is far more common than you might suspect. I know one jumper who took five seconds slider down and didn't sustain any injuries or canopy damage. Surely that was lucky, but canopies are pretty burly. Personaly I've taken over 3.5 seconds slider down intentionally, and 4 seconds unintentionally.

The thing has about 180m of height. If you jumping it, best is either slider down, or slider up and open at the second walkway (makes a good 4 second), this also minimise the time under canopy... (Record there is 7 seconds, 5 freefall and 2 under canopy ;-))

Stay safe!

Re: [mostwanted] So you want to get into base?
On my Mojo I use one break setting for slider up and slider down.
On my Troll I use two settings, deep and shallow.

I think 4 break settings are a little excessive, but I know some people use 3 settings.

Main thing is to be dialed in and comfortable about your settings, and how it will react in a variety of situations and conditions.
