Turkey Boogie!
WOW!! What a great time.

Many thanks to Jimmy and Marta, and most especially thanks to those who reached down and grabbed my hand and helped me up to the top.

This was my first trip, and I'm at a loss of words trying to describe it.

If I may, I attached a few "generic" stills.. I have many more.

Thanks again, and congrats to the Texans and their qualifying BASE # jumps, myself included.

Yes indeed, the Turkey boogie was a great time this year despite the less than perfect weather. I made five jumps in total (including one off of a new exit point) and got to witness some scary stuff (a cliff strike, a pilot chute in tow and a nasty line twist jump off of a forward flip) to serve as a reminder that this is not a safe sport.

I'm definitely looking forward to my next Moab trip. Sly

Two of the incidents (pc in tow and line twists) happened to DZ.com regulars. So I thought they would do a better job telling us in their own words what happened than to get my view. As for the wall strike, I saw it happen, but I don't know the details of what caused the wall strike.

In reply to:
Did anyone get hurt?

The fellow who hit the wall suffered a leg injury, but he got very very lucky. He landed in a part of the tallis void of many big bolders. It could have, should have been much worse.

Yeah! What grand times. Enjoyed everyone's company once again. Major props to Jimmy and Marta for the organization and dinner Thursday eve.

Did some interesting jumps, including my 100th (rollover off 210 ft - Welshman's wall). And a front flip into 1.5 line twists off Tombstone, its all good, I needed a little excitement.

Today is quite depressing, real world and finals just don't cut it compared to Moab. Until next time...

The PC in tow was VERY interesting and in my opinion deserves it's own thread. When I get time I will start that, if the person doesn't beat me to it. Factors included were the multi attachment point. If it wasn't off of the frozen pizza (i.e. a lower exit) it would not have been a good thing at all. More to come.

What exactly is a PC in tow in BASE jumping?
I always new it in skydiving terms as a total malfunction where the main container never opens resulting in (hopefully) a reserve ride.

Think container lock.
For some reason, the pilot chute isn't generating enough drag to open the container and extract the parachute.

It could be a pilot chute issue. Possiblities include:
Worn out, damaged, wrong size pilot chute for the planned delay, or random freak occurence such as bridle tangling with/pinching off the pilot chute.

Or the pilot chute can be just fine, but something prevents the container from opening.
Possibilities include:
Mis-routed bridle, improper closing procedures, a poorly/improperly functioning shrivel flap on a velcro container, too much tension on the closing loop(s) of a pin rig, and so on.

It's always a bit disconcerting to hear about this type of problem.
If anyone can shed light on the specifics of this incident, it'd be much appreciated.

Up by the yoke, there's several rubberbands to stow the multi bridle. If one of these hangs up, the PC is pulling on the stow and can't extract the canopy until the stow releases.

Re: [DexterBase] Turkey Boogie!
That's exactly what happened. Actually to our dear friend on borrowed gear. The setup used black rubber bands (full) and we asked someone who knew about multi's and she said they are cutting these black bands in half now. I know nothing about the multi, but I personally don't like it. Again I say personally, I know a lot of people like them/jump them and setup right I see the benefit. This particular situation ended in a hand held 1/2 second jump turning into a 3 1/2 second pilot chute tow. It was not cool. I don't know how people are setting up these multi's and I know that the recommended way is with half a black rubber band (or regular bands) but if anyone is still using a full black stow, DON'T! PLEASE! I almost lost a friend to a simple little rubber band (and then who would I jump with?Tongue). I was going to do a new thread, but hopefully enough people will see this and spread it around if it isn't already well known. I am not saying the multi is bad, I think what I am getting at is not done correctly (like with anything in this sport) it CAN kill you.

I spoke wiith an eyewitnesss to this incident, ( an eyewitness that showed good sense to walk down from the site because he was uncomfortable with prevailing wind conditions).
.
He told me that the jumper in question clearly took
less than a 1 second delay prior to releasing his PC.

I saw the entire jump clearly from the ground as well, plus several times on video. He *may* not have taken a complete 1 second, but it was damn close. Besides, the delay should be almost irrelevant if he set up the gear properly.

In reply to:
That short of a delay is asking for trouble with any bridle attachment system IMO

Huh? Are you saying that all jumps should require at least a second delay?... Crazy And if you had seen the jump or video, once again, he clearly did not release his PC prematurely.
Shortcut
Re: [brits17] Turkey Boogie!
Not irrelevant. Delay is never irrelevant. Physics says otherwise.

Try holding onto your canopy when you throw it out of the window of your SUV. Tough huh?

Now try it on your skate board.

In a 3 second delay you could've chained that bastard up and it would've opened.

Ok, not really...but you get my drift.

It would be pretty complacent to believe any aspect of a jump is irrelevant. BASE is about reduction of variation. Consistency is the key. If you can truely eliminate variation then BASE is truely safe.

Black rubber has been around for ever. This wasn't the first time this has happened. I have tons of this stuff on video. This was (as usual) a number of contributors stacking up but for every contributor to disaster there is an appropriate countermeasure which was lacking.

Throw 'n goes will always be an increased risk (how much I wouldn't try to quantify but more risk is worse)due to the relatively small forces involved. I'll jump the black fukkers on a terminal jump any day (although I still wouldn't recommend it...right tool for the right job). Throw and go? No thanks.

Grow some hair on your chest, Jedi. 2.5 to 3 seconds will keep you alive longer from this big stuff. Hurling on launch is never guaranteed to be the most expeditious method for extracting your canopy.

The quest for increasing snatch doesn't mean we're looking for more basejumping chicks (no more hate mail please. That was another joke)

Stay safe
Shortcut
Re: [Skinflicka] Turkey Boogie!
You're right, its never irrelevant. I was just trying to make the point that in this circumstance, I believe a multi should function regardless of delay time if set up properly.

Re: [brits17] Turkey Boogie!
Only if you rig it correctly, right on.

I know Brits, I'm picking. But this forum is aimed at newbies so all the experienced jumpers (you included) need to ensure your responses, if technical are correct and exhaustive. This is the main reason I hardly ever post technical threads. I'd hate to think that I was responsible for poor info cos I only have a few (drunken) minutes to spare to write a below par response.

Your post would've raised no eyebrows on the BASE board.

I've been thinking recently that maybe the more experienced jumpers may be a part of the problem for the newer guys. Half the time our posts don't stand close scrutiny unless you already have a certain amount of familiarity and expertise to follow the threads closely.

Perhaps we assume too much. Perhaps we should keep these threads on Blinc?

In the interests of keeping this a newbie thread and therefore less deeply technical...how about you and me gettin' it on sometime?

I think it is much more likely that the short delay was the primary reason for this near bounce.

No way. The delay was not incorrect, The Multi hanging up on the rubber band was the problem. What you say there suggests that every delay less than one second is in question. In my opinion, the tow *probably* would have happened even with a 1 1/2 second delay. If you watch the vid, it clearly towed for over 3 seconds so even a 1 1/2 second delay very likely wouldn't have provided enough snatch force to clear the stowed Mutli. It's unclear to me after reading drides post in the rubberbands thread whether it was stowed too deeply or not. As I heard it from the owner of the rig, it was stowed 1/2 inch however, he may have been more clear with dride. Either way, the delay was not the issue.

Take note that the container was already open when the PC was in tow. The container would have opened with a 0 second delay.

In reply to:
I spoke wiith an eyewitnesss to this incident, ( an eyewitness that showed good sense to walk down from the site because he was uncomfortable with prevailing wind conditions

Is there any correlation behind your eyewitness friend who walked down and the pilot chute in tow?

I was an eyewitness as well as loads of other people. While there were some winds, the conditions didn't interfere with anyone's deployment, or canopy flight.
Shortcut
Re: [hookitt] Turkey Boogie!
In reply to:

The Winds were an issue in the jumpers decision to go hand held,(believing it would be safer) with a short delay. ( Which could have led to the possible differences in snatch force from one of their usual delays.) which would most likely have been longer.

Absolutely. However, the PC towed for a long time. This rig was configured properly, according to BR's recommendations.

If I do a go and throw, my pins will pop as soon as the PC inflates. After that, there's nothing to prevent the canopy from being pulled to linestretch.

With BASE gear, you shouldn't have to take a full second delay to ensure you don't have a PC in tow. You should be able to take whatever delay you want and expect the container to open immediately.

I think a better option, if you insist on controlling the multi, would be to put a 1 1/4" rubberband, cut in half lengthwise, around the s-folded multi bridle. Only one wrap. This will not prevent the PC from extracting the canopy, but it'll keep the multi bridle together until the inflated PC pulls it out.

Keep in mind, I don't jump BR gear or use a multi.
Shortcut
Re: [hookitt] Turkey Boogie!
"While there were some winds, the conditions didn't interfere with anyone's deployment, or canopy flight."

I agree. I was third off the rock, and though there was some marginal wind, it was just that, marginal. I felt comfortable doing the manuever I did regardless of the wind, and I am a wuss, so that goes to show you, too, it wasn't real bad.

Re: [DexterBase] Turkey Boogie!
In reply to:

The weight of the canopy and the corners of the container might hold it in there for a bit. I've seen a dropped PC on a PCA result in an open container, inflated PC in tow, and canopy sitting in the pack tray for nearly a second.

With modern pin rigs, especially if you are doing things like priming pins, using slicker loops, lengthening loops, etc, that may yield looser pins, it is no longer necessarily true that the maximum extraction force requirement occurs at container opening. With some setups, you can now see canopy extraction requiring _more_ force than container opening. (Obviously, in PK's case, multi deployment required more force than container opening.)

jumping multi canopyes all the time(actualy never jumped anything else)i NEVER use rubberbands to stow the multi no matter if i sheet the multi or not.I simply nicely make s folds on the multi until it has the lenght i want to close the container.

Yes, it is possible that the added snatch force of the pilot chute after a 2 second delay could have freed the Multi sheath from the black band. For sure, 1/2 second was NOT enough snatch force to accomplish this.

This rig was configured properly, according to BR's recommendations.

if all these guys are in love with me, why am I sitting here all alone?

Note to self ... it looks like JeNnEjEnN needs a little TLC.

Back on topic ... Moab was fun and I just may find myself back there again this weekend if Mother Nature cooperates. Sly

Yea, maybe make a 2005 calender, with hot chicks, in bikinis, at exit points... Or topless, with their rigs on...

Yes, that would fit inside my cube nicely...

Re: [peterk] Turkey Boogie!
Nice!
great idea. I'm in... Tongue
Even better... nothing but a bikini (or those fun star nipple band-aid like things...), a rig, and some han-wags... hahahaLaugh

Maybe kinda like the old leading edge base ad huh?Shocked

Re: [JeNnEjEnN] Turkey Boogie!
ya know jen, i was wanting to do my 100th naked, with nothin but body armor and hanwags on... now wouldn't that be cool?... at least humorous.

oh well, i was boring and it never happened. Unsure

Re: [brits17] Turkey Boogie!
I don't know about where you are, but in NC it is unwritten law that your 100th is done naked...

In reply to:
now wouldn't that be cool?

Oh yeah...30 degrees if I remember correctly...

But...
The body armor would pretty much negate the nudity, would it not?

Some people put saftey before your NC traditions 704... lol Is 700 the only one in the NC crew to not do his 100th naked?

Yeah but it would have a certain "Xena: Warrior Chick" appeal.

Really? Say it isn't so.Crazy
I can't believe that someone would actually consider their own well being to be more important than keeping a tradition such as the naked 100th alive...
Skin is right...base jumpers are definitely losing their edge.

In reply to:

Yep.Unsure
Oh, boy...I hope for his sake 515 doesn't see this.
This is a huge blaspheme against all that is base as far as he's concerned...just take a look at his avatar...
Add in the factor that he was 700's mentorWink...I think you get the picture. (hopefully, not too vividly)

You know...I fully expected that from someone, but I didn't really think that it would be one of our own...

Now 704, I didn't imply that I would not be living up to the honor on my 100th, but let's look at it from another standpoint... Does anyone really want to see me naked?

I can only speak for myself, but that would be a big "no".

I was referring to the fact that I expected someone to whine about "safety first", but I didn't expect that it'd be you...Tongue
