I’m going to be trying several static line type jumps from a tandem paraglider (again). I’ve done this before using my vented Fox 225 both with and without a slider (used tailgate when jumped without slider). The goal of mine is to jump my Sabre 107 this way. I’d like to be able to slowly downsize canopies step by step rather than killing myself going from a Fox 225 to a Sabre 107. I’m going to borrow canopies from people starting with a 190 then a 170 then 150 and so on until I feel comfortable jumping the 107. The question I have is this. What should I do about a slider? Should I use the sail slider the canopy has on it or should I take it off and use some tape as a tailgate? Or should I get a mesh slider made for each canopy? Getting a mesh slider made for every different size would get expensive. I plan on doing these jumps from an altitude of around 1000’ AGL and I would have a round hand deploy type paragliding reserve (although I don’t trust those types of reserves much).
I know this isn't the smartest idea but it's something I want to do and I am just trying to find out the safest way of doing it.

i would surgest getting more alti then testing the slider off option.

More altitude won't really be an option this time of year. Not enough (or good enough) thermals to get much higher unless I get really lucky.

I have done quite a few S/L out of a paraglider all the way down to my xaos-103 with no slider. i had no problems except with a cobalt 150 with a slider but it all worked out. those round paraglider reserves are a great idea i have seen them save lives as low as 100 feet.

Towing? Do you mean getting towed up on the tandem and then jumping out instead of ground launching from a hill? Or do you mean something different?

What happened? Was it caused by the use of a slider? Lastly, did you use some tape or something to act as a tailgate to prevent a line-over or did you just risk it?

yes towing up by truck or boat, tandem or solo when i jumped the 150 it took 1200 feet to open and i jumped from 1500 that is all. when jumping no slider i still used a skydiving rig with a reserve but no tailgate or anything like it.

I'd definitely recommend using a tailgate. I've seen all manner of high performance canopies direct bagged, slider down. The worst hazard appears to be line twist, so I'd watch out for that. If possible, I'd recommend wearing your normally packed BASE rig as a backup, with extra rings to hold the high performance canopy. Then, if you have a nasty mal, you can always chop the Sabre (or whatever) and pitch the BASE PC. It's not an ideal solution, but it's far better than spinning in under a malfunctioning skydiving canopy.

Have you d-bagged your paraglider this way? I can't remember.

Actually getting a tailgate installed or would tape work ok?



Not possible because the Sabre will be attached to my paragliding harness. I use that harness because I need the wheels to land on the ground. There's no way to use my BASE rig for this.



No, just my Fox. Maybe in the future I'll try d-bagging my PG but they just don't open that well and I'd prefer not to have a reserve ride under a round. UGH!

Tape should work ok for doing it a couple times. If it becomes a regular thing, I'd install a tailgate (which is only 10 minutes work, anyway).
