My last few jumps have been on a 270 ft object, hand held with a 46" pc. It feIt like it was taking too long for the shrivel flap to peel so I decided to prime the velcro... Which got me thinking.
Should I put enough of the bridal in my hand that it starts peeling the shrivel flap as I extend my arm to throw the PC?
Has anyone tried this? any thoughts?

at 270' things tend to seem like they take longer to work. If you are used to juping something a bit higher and using a 42" PC, you might be sensing the 46"PC taking a hair longer to inflate.

What delays were you taking? If you are doing go and throws, then expect hang time. Even just a half second delay makes a big difference. Maybe use a 48" PC or even better find something higher to jump from until you are a bit more experienced.

As Harry P. told me "You are now in the trenches, be very, very careful. Go find something higher to learn off".

something I've done in the past (and this is without anyone else's input so your mileage may vary and the reaper may lurk nearby, dunno) is block out some of the velcro by cutting myself short lengths of 3/4" velcro loop and placing them onto the hook along the container flaps... depending on how many of these pieces you put on, you can effectively block out a percentage of surface area of velcro attachment. Use a contrasting color so you don't forget them when you're packing for a terminal jump in a drunken stupor.

p.s. make damn sure you have plastic-reinforced flaps... else you may do yourself in on the low stuff. some of the early containers were manuf'd without reinforced flaps... this has sometimes resulted in a towed PC 'til the airspeed picked up; you won't have that luxury @ 270'

I open with plenty of room (heh) but I was just curious.

I could guess that it's not good because your container would be open and nothing would be in tension (still slack in the bridle). I've always heard a premature container opening is bad!
I don't know but just a thought.

I've seen/experienced super scary stuff on containers with no stiffeners in the side flaps. As long as you have stiffened sideflaps and a functional shrivel flap, I see no problem with the method you described.

I've seen people use far less precise methods. Um, I watched one jumper put strips of paper towel in there... worked just fine.
