Just to let everyone know I DO NOT CONTROL any BASE JUMPERS in my area or any where else for that matter. These are grown men and weman making their own dissisions.
The tower that you are talking about, YES I have jummped it many times at night and in day, with permission from the land owner and the company that rents a spot on this sight. I jumped it many times in the day when they were there working on the damn thing. They liked watching!!!!
I dont see how you or anyone else can call it HOT when everyone knows what is going on.

There are alot of people that dont like the way I do things, And I dont like the way most other BASE jumpers do things. But you dont hear me bitching about it when I see someone with FACE paint on hiding in the shadows of an Object that I have jumped with permission several times. Here it is again MAN UP talk to people. Hell everyone that I ever talked to about an object has let me jump it many times. Thats whats wrong with BASE now people want to keep it secret so that they feel like they are STEALING something when they jump.LET PEOPLE KNOW MAN UP!

A note to all: Let's try to keep this discussion civil, as well.

A thought for John. Once you start training people in your area, you are responsible for them in an ethical sense. Just saying "it wasn't me" isn't really sufficient, in our normal community ethics. Teachers and mentors are expected to exercise good judgment in selecting students, and instill good ethics in those students. While no one expects you to be responsible for 100% of things that go on in your area, by starting the training cycle, you do create a certain responsibility for yourself in it's outcome.

Tell me what to do! Do I beat them up or call the BASE police on them. NO I CANT CONTROL what people do. What would you do if someone from your BASE course decides that the wont to jump everything in sight and wouldnt listen to you? You would probably do what I have done, WASH your hands of everything.

Actually, I'd probably make an effort to jump with them more, and lead them into better ways. Leadership is only rarely about brow beating.

Still, in this case, it sounds to me like what you have is a lesson you've learned about student selection. The real way to avoid these kinds of problems on your home ground is to be very careful about who you bring into the sport. You and I have the luxury of being able to be very picky about who we train--because we're not doing this as a business.

Not a whole lot you can do about that now, just something to think about the next time. We've all made mistakes. The trick is not repeating them.

Mistakes!!! You call it a mistake that I made, when someone goes out on their own and BLAZES everything in sight. So if that were the case, THE ONE that I learned from would also be responsible, By what your saying is that its a chain reaction that falls on the teacher if someone falls into doing things their way instead of what they are tought. If one of my students goes out and blazes something, even years later, I do share some of the responsibility. The sooner after they leave my tutelage, the more of the burden is mine, I believe.

I could be way off base here, no pun intended, but it was my understanding that the person we are goosestepping around naming here, the problem child himself, was never a student of yours John. Am I mistaken? I mean, I asked you for over a year to start mentoring me and you made it clear that you were not taking students, not training people, not being responsible for starting people out BASE jumping. That was CRYSTAL CLEAR to me.

A friend of mine came through your hood recently and had good things to say about you and your hospitality. That makes you OK in my book, but I do think that the general attitude in SC towards base is at best marginal. The whole sonic beef skydiver thing is cute and all that, but I see a lot of skydiver mentality on the beef web page that does not really mesh to well with BASE ettiquette. I'm not telling you how to do your thing, but there has been a lot of problems in your neck of the woods, and most of it has to do with newbies teaching newbies teaching newbies, and little regard to BASE ethics. Everyone effects everyone else in this sport. If somebody is fucking things up in your hood, you just may have to set things straight.

John, for better or worse (my buddy says for better) you are a lead guy down there. You set the tone for many. If you don't push the idea of being stealth, preserving sites, and the like, others will follow your lead. To start with, a giant "Were loud, obnoxious drunk, boisterous skydiver/ basejumpers" web site isn't really the base way.

We've had similar potential problems around Maryland, and yes, we pretty much threatened people's health, well being, and gear if they were to do somehting really stupid. We are self policing, so if people aren't doing right by you and yours, fix it.

I'd be happy to share a jump with you, if there is anything left to jump down there in the future.

The whole SONIC BEEF page is mostly all skydivers from my DZ thats why it looks like all skydivers. My post was to let everyone know that when it comes to things in this area Iam NOT the go to guy! It seems that when something goes wrong my name gets dragged in the middle of it. I know your bro and he is a damn good guy,and any time that any of you come here you will be greeted with open arms!

Good thing Maryland is only a few minutes long on a trip to someplace worth a shit. BASE is jsut a small portion of our lives and what we do has nothing to do with blazing shit. Nobody has a problem when we jump these things just as cautiously as you. It's one monkey screwing it up for everyone. If you think we should hurt this kid then maybe we need to look at who has the problems here.

You don't define what everyone thinks about BASE even though there are gonna be a shitload of groupies gathering around this one. I am pretty sure that the sooner you get a grip the better. Yeah the whole thing about newbies taking newbies was the same guy Leroy Buckly...He took his brother one of my AFF students with only 5 jumps and put him off a tower and almost killed him. You are right, I don't define BASE, that is for sure; But I know it when I see it. Take PDX a few years ago for example, they defined what a base scene was. I don't live in either place, but having been around for a while, and having eyes and ears, I can see and hear whats going on.

I don't like drama, so I will stay as far away from your guys problem as possible, but in my eyes, taking someone on their first jump puts a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. Whether or not you jump with that person ever again, by giving them that first taste you are the catalyst to begin the cycle. I agree on the fact that we are all (mostly) big boys and girls, and I have put one person off of the potato myself, but there are three people (the previous included) in the world right now, that I would take for their first jump. The difference between these and others is that I know them well, and trust them (not comparing to yours, as I don't know who you have or have not taught). I truly don't know and (I mean this in the nicest possible way) don't care whats going on out there, but I hope you guys can resolve your issues and continue to do what we all love to do... and have fun DAMMIT!

IN case any on this board weren't aT THE video contest at the Holiday Inn on Thur night at Bridge day. These guys showed a Video titled " DAY BLAZEN" by Eastern North Carolina crew. THey showed all of their little day jumps at these same towers in question, I think they actually won a prize for it. It was edited by John Hayes and included jumps by Leroy and others. Most of the sites shown are burnt now. John, if you don't have anything to do with these guys? Then why were they all in the video??

Feel free to blame me, since i took you on your first jump.

Let me set the story straight. I entered my own video. My videos were not included in johns day blazing video.

Another good one. One thing the city is lacking: non-man made objects. Something about cliffs.

LAST but not least scroll back and look at all the abuse that I have taken on here becouse of YOU. This is how the Carolina's split in the first place, now you guys are feeding an age old fire that sparked in the days of the Civil War. Going to the technical side of this, did I read correctly, a rollover (McConkey) with brakes in hand unstowed? I don't know a lot, but that doesn't seem like a good idea to me (and really, I don't know, so that is why I ask), I just think of accidentally yanking on one more than the other during that inflation. I also am thinking about if heading matters, say it was a solid object B, A, or E, would you still do it with brakes in hand? Sorry, didn't mean to interupt the fight night, but I would like to know how this works for you.

Thats correct I keep my toggles in hand when i roll over so when it starts to inflate I pull half brakes so I maybe wont get a line over.I have seen a couple of line overs on McConkeys with brakes stowed. I have never had a problem with this technique but who is to say if this is correct or not. I have a McConkey on a "B" and off of the pillor at {edit: site name ~TA} and never any problems. I saw this technique in the video Soul Flyers and thought it was pretty good. If you have any advice please let me know.

Is your slider up or down? Are you using a tailgate?

I've seen several slider up line overs on McConkeys. I've yet to see one line over with a tailgate, though.

A few general comments:

1) I'm going to leave this thread active. I do think it's good to talk some of these things over, and we can have some positive outcomes (note, I'm seeing a little start toward warming in the old Parkton standoff, and I think that's good).

2) The next person who directs a profanity toward another poster will be banned, as will the next after that, and so on. Stop calling each other "assholes" or whatever else, please.

3) Let's all try to calm down and talk this out. Carolina politics seem to be one of the main causes of locked threads on this board lately. I'd like to see if you guys can come to some kind of resolution. Not only would that be good for my headache, but it would also probably be good for all of you, and you objects. John has been grown up enough to post his phone number. I wonder if anyone will be mature enough to pick up the phone and call him. Talking directly to each other is almost always more productive than shouting on the internet.

I don't know a lot, I have done all but two of mine off the potato, and gone stowed deep brakes. I did maybe two slider up, but heard that isn't a great idea, and usually use a tailgate when I go slider down on them. This I think (and have heard) can slow pressurization. I see how keeping the brakes in hand could be beneficial, there would be no surge from popping toggles and releasing too quickly. I will gather all my thoughts on them if you like, but know, like I said, I am a newbie. I have maybe 30 unpacked jumps give or take, (a mixture of rollovers, reverse rollovers, TARD's, and TARDovers (or whatever we are calling them)) so anything I have found is nothing but work in progress.

If you are talking about the Roll Over from that bridge in the Soul Flyers Clip (I have not seen the entire video) I am pretty sure, no, I am positive that is no BASE canopy but is in fact a paraglider.
I dont know alot about them but just a point I thought should be presented. Personally I think that is far more ballsy than with a BASE canopy.
I just don;t think I would want to rely on what works wth a very different kind of wing for comparsion with a BASE canopy.

In the video a guy does one out of a cable car well actually 1 guy does it out of a cable car and 2 off the wire. I know the clip your talking about and thats not the clip.

I met a very skilled paraglider up at the potato in August who was doing rollovers with his glider. It was VERY ballsy in my opinion, I actually think a paraglider was where the idea stemmed from. Anyway, the video he showed was a sketchier one because of the way that the paraglider is, there is a huge amount of slack in the lines while you do it, and shit if they have some kind of tailgatelike mechanism to help with issues to follow (if any). It just kind of inflated wrong, it all worked out fine, kind of just sinking him down fast for a while until he got a handle on it and landed it.

Leroy, there is no need for naming sites here. Even if it is burned it's still bad etiquette to name sites... are you ever going to learn?

Parkton crew, some of us that try to stay under the radar here in NC would like to get a heads up next time another tower is burned. The (2) 2000' towers with the elevators were being jumped for a few years before you guys set them on fire and a call or email to let others know they are hot would be nice... don't you think you would want to know if I got busted on a tower you jump?

All this burning, bitching and buffoonery is really making ALL of the jumpers in NC and SC look bad and get bad reputations. Over the last few months I have had to explain myself and how I conduct myself on BASE jumps because people think I'm part of your group when they find out I'm from NC. This is a bunch of bullshit! I have been BASE jumping for over 8 years and have made over 500 jumps all over the world with hundreds of skilled BASE jumpers and have tried to build friendships so that I get to jump the choice sites when I travel and so people won't think I'm going to burn their sites. Now after all those years of work of building relationships worldwide, your lack of ethics and care to preserve sites is threatening that and has given all the other jumpers from NC and SC a black eye. My suggestion is that if you guys ever want to travel outside of your area you need to start to rectify the situation, NOW! I realize that not everyone down your way is 'out of control' but the consensus in the BASE community seems to be that everyone in this area is a loose cannon.

Doesn't wash. There's very little to be learnt from that video (other than what your antenna looks like in broad daylight.) If anything all it tells us is landings can be hard if you fail to land your canopy correctly, and guess what.....if you'd typed "did a 2way other day, got spooked at the close proximity of other canopy, didn't turn into wind and landed hard", that would have done the trick.


This whole "i'm trying hard to help people not make the same mistakes as me" so i'll post this highly controversial day blazing video of a 2 way i did where i biffed in on landing" story is a smokescreen.You thought there was Kudos to be had ,so you ploughed in on a WORLDWIDE forum and posted regardless of the sensitivity.

You quite clearly make the point that your only mistake was to go public with your video, failing to see that day blazing the object was bad form.

Someone made the point about worldwide credibility. If you ever want to travel and jump other people's objects you will probably need their help. At the moment if you posted looking for jumpers to help you out in other areas you may well come up short. Fortunately you strike me as the kind of person who will never venture beyond your own back yard, so i sympathise with jumpers (both NC and SC) who are stuck with you.

Apart from the shit canopy control, I thought the 2-way itself sucked as well. Either it was poorly planned or the jumpers in question can't stick to a designated delay (maybe if the lower man went stowed it would've helped?).

IMHO low experience jumpers doing 2-ways from '300 is pretty stupid (let alone poor canopy control, dayblazing and subsequently posting MTV 'I'm so hardkore' videos on the net for 'educational' purposes).

I know that in light of the way this thread has progressed, and how heated these types of discussions become on here even between people who respect and admire each other, it can seem as if everything that we don't agree with will come off as an attack. As some have stated previously, often the only way to get through some thick skulls is to take the paths we'd rather not HAVE to take.

Having said that, and all personal feelings aside, several people posting toward the tail end of this thread have made some valid points that hit home with me. Knowing good BASE ethics, or showing that you can learn them, and actually practicing them are two different things. I mentioned initially on Sonic Beef that I thought that the video was initially posted with the intent to learn. I've since revised my opinion. Perhaps that did play some small part. Here's where it gets tough to try and distinguish between an attack and an observation. Some people need attention and constant affirmation of their life's course and they don't present the image that they care how they get that attention or affirmation. When it becomes so important to be heard/seen that you do things you have previously been advised against, time and time again, and your actions wind up creating problems for more people than just you and your immediate circle of acquaintances, it's time to stop trying to justify what you've done, listen to what the vast majority of people have said to you and humble yourself. And not just for a day, a week, a month.

Humility is not a trait often found in BASE jumpers, I've noticed. The ones who are humble are rarely heard from in a negative light. People, especially newcomers to this activity like myself, who lack the ability to be humble and accept when we've made mistakes are not going to get very far in this sport...and perhaps that's for the best. Maybe once nobody will jump with you or take you with them or include you in any way, shape or form in their BASE activities, perhaps the lesson begins to germinate in the ol' brainsoil.

There comes a time when people need to listen. Especially when everyone else is telling you you have a problem. Since, based on some posts in this thread, BASE interventions seem to have the potential to get a bit heavy handed, maybe understanding that trying to convince everyone else that THEY are the problem only makes you look even more guilty will help start the process of humility.

I'm new to BASE. I have much to learn and am willing to take as much time as necessary, and then some, to make sure I do things right. If that means eating crow and then shutting my mouth and truly LISTENING while others tell me things I'd rather not hear, then so be it. This community is small enough, even globally, that word gets around fairly quickly. The more people you piss off, the less likely it is you'll have someone on your side when you really need them.

Defending someone who proves on a regular basis, ground-bound or not, that they revel in being a problem child and touting what appears to be a severe lack of social skills, becomes tiresome. It becomes so tiresome that you can no longer defend that person. I'm tired.

Good post McDuck. We BASE newbies have so much to learn, so much to observe and must remember to practice the right BASE ethics which we are taught. I know swoopers are always telling the next breed of swoopers that becoming a bad-ass swooper is a marathon not a sprint. And BASE should be no different.

Now why did Tom have to go and ban a bunch of people for a week (or whatever time frame they were banned). This thread was like "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" soap opera BASE thread. It's going to be boring with all of the principle characters sitting on the side lines.

515 and 570 have been running a smooth and fun local scene in NC for many years. I am to this day very impressed with their object selection and longevity. It is very sad that certain beginners burn those objects instead of adding the new ones. It is equally unpleasant that these folks give a bad image to "NC crew", and separating the good from the bad will take some time.

Fun BASE life involves a lot of travel. Your image is very important when you visit new places and deal with locals. You may be a nice person but if you build a crappy online image, it will take a lot of effort to change it later on. Specificaly, i doubt that Leroy will be invited on any jumps by those who followed this discussion, and changing such perception is going to be a lot of work.

I have some additional thoughts on this, from an outsiders perspective, that I'll PM/email to relevant parties.

Please, talk to each other, guys. Communication doesn't solve all problems, but it helps most of them.
