I BASE jump because… Man has already walked on the moon. We've already explored the deepest trenches of the ocean and the highest mountains on Earth. Most of the frontiers have already been explored. BASE jumpers are exploring the boundaries of the human mind every day. We're going further and further into the unknown and rewriting the possibilities of human flight and human achievement. BASE jumping is one activity where you can stand next to your heroes as equals and step onto the same playing field. If you’ve never experienced the sensations of flying your body through the air, it’s absolutely worth taking a look at. We watch records get broken all the time, and you never know what somebody’s going to do next.

So what? I'm sure he meant it at the time. What difference does that make?
Shortcut
Re: [DexterBase] Bio
I'm not saying it makes a difference at all. I'm just saying that he did kill himself... London was a guy it would have been cool to hang around - sailor, boxer, dock worker, lumberer, sometime gold prospector, also a communist, well-known author (Sea Wolf, Call of the Wild). I'm sure if it had been a little later he would have been a pilot as well, probably flying in South America like Jimmy Angel. He also drank prodigously, and actually wrote a semi-biographical novel about an author who drank and then killed himself..... Like I said, an interesting guy. He died too young.

Sounds like an interesting wingloading for base. Is that your weight with gear and clothing included?

Edited to add that I am referring to the Ace 220. Do you still use this canopy, and if so, in what conditions (more wind, bigger landing areas, terminal vs. non-terminal)?

Thanks,

Eipmoez

Most of my jumps with that canopy have been off of terminal towers in moderate wind conditions. So that wingloading is good for having a bit of extra forward drive.

At the time that I purchased it, I weighed just a *tad* less, so I've since outgrown it a touch. Blush

In fact, the thing I've had to get used to is the dramatic difference in drive between the 220 and the 266... especially since the Rock Dragon has been designed to have even less forward drive than comparable canopies.

I like them both and I think they are both fine in their respective environments (the 220 for moderate/high wind terminal As, the 266 for short delays).

Parachute: Fox 240

Records or awards: Med Research Council award for junior scientist 1988
Pet peeves: violence, unco-ordinated drivers, queuing, salt in my food and trendy lefty liberals who think you can rehabilitate criminals (shoot the f*ckers I say)! Religious Zealots of all persuasions.
What is your favorite quote? ...The only time you should look down on someone is when you are giving them a hand up (Martin Luther King or Ali-I forget). or "They asked for it" Julius Caesar after looking at the carnage following Pharsalus during Roman Civil war.
What is your philosophy on life? The clocks always ticking, you have to cram all the experiences in whilst you still draw breath.
What is something most people don’t know about you? The Drs thought I was retarded when I was born. My mother thinks they are still correct.
Who has inspired you in BASE-jumping? Easy. Saw an old documentary when I was about 16 that was called the 'Human Fly.' I think it featured an Aussie called Nick F. Even though it wasn't until 1989 when I did my first base jump, that was the catalyst (the 2nd was 11 yrs later)
What is your most memorable BASE jumping moment? Easy-there's 3 of them. (1)Wingsuit from Eiger carring ashes of a deceased base'r, (2)standing on top of a building in Auckland, hucking only to land next to the police and ambulance crew who had been attending a fight between 2 large homies. I landed in the middle of it all and started to walk away...heh, heh. (3) Xmas eve-up a tall object in AZ with some friends in the freezing cold. Xmas has a new meaning

Parachute:Dagger 277, Rock Dragon 303
Home Dropzone:Have to say Mile Hi
Records or Awards:First person to succesfully execute a "steamroller" (to MY knowledge) Cool
Pet peeves:Well, appropriately, every ASS who told me six times over the last week that I need to vote, and how I need to vote, and where I need to vote, and who I should vote for, and what I should vote for, and why I should vote for them, and why I should vote for that... seriously. People who take all of this WAY too seriously (life I mean).
What is your favorite quote?"Your heart is free, have the courage to follow it."
What is your philosophy on life?I think we are way to simple to understand something as complex as life and death.
What is something most people don't know about you?How I really feel a lot of the time.
Who has inspired you in BASE?That's hard because of the amount of people, and some of you probably would have no idea why but... Rick H., Dwain W., Jimmy P., Marta, Peter, Jamie, Ray P., Katie, Chad, Vlady, Tom A., Russell, Aaron (from B.C.), Bob S., Dan G., Tim M., Miles D., all of the videos I watched (Standard Issue, Continuum, 1st BASE, BASE Forever, it goes on), and of course, last but certainly not least, all of the girls who made me despondant enough to need to try something new, just to clear my mind.
Most memorabe BASE jumping moment:I was doing a four way at the potato, one person going from the "dark side". I did a gainer in the middle of two friends. I looked over as I was coming around to see my friends chute coming out of her pack tray and stretching. I pitched and looked up at my sniveling canopy (slider up) and saw above me my friends canopies filling the gap where I would have been. I don't know why, but it was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. I realized on that jump that I enjoyed seeing my friends there with me in that perfect place, sharing the experience, way more than I enjoyed pounding out solo's trying to add another rotation. Thanks guys, I won't likely forget that one.
Describe Adam Foster in five words or less:Trying to figure it out.
I BASE jump because...Initially I have no idea. It has become this amazing thing that plagues (in a good way) my dreams and constantly runs through my mind. I can't seem to justify "It's fun" due to the trade off of death though. So what I think it has really become is this: I have never been more scared of anything than I am at a lot of exit points, except when it comes to death. Death scares me more, and I think by standing face to face with what I fear most (in BASE), it will assist me to face anything, even death.

Who has inspired you in BASE jumping?
Firstly, Myself - I have manged to tame my fears, other than that - then Mark Amodeo for being more scared than me on an exit but still flicking the 240ft B with shit landing area, and also flicking a well known "cheesey" cliff solo, and obviously people like Slim who went back to jump after horrific injury, and DW who just pushed the limits that we never thought were able to be pushed. - In the end I get inspired by everyone - there is always someone out there that amazes me in what they are doing, whether its someone with 10 jumps or 1000 jumps - YOU ARE ALL INSPIRING!
What is your most memorable BASE jumping moment? Fucking up my leg quite badly........... the one that put the biggest smile on my face though, was doing a 270ft E with Faber on his first E........

Pet peeves:people who are always sure of what has to be done.

What is your favorite quote?
"now I see what you were doing... You just needed someplace high to jump off..." Some farmer wondering what my buddy was doing parked down at the road next to this antenna near his farm...
or how about
"Your buddy Joe tells us there's someone named Rob up there. You want to climb down so we can have a little talk with you too???"

What is your philosophy on life? There has to be something I'm alright at.

What is something most people don't know about you? I mostly feel like an anachronism.

Who has inspired you in BASE?Phil Smith, Kevin Venell (the little Texan), Robin Heid (that's right, Satan himself, and I still admire him!), Joe Stanley.

Most memorabe BASE jumping moment:Sitting atop a 700' antenna under a bright blue sky on a windy day above a solid 400' thick ground fog. The only thing I could see from the real world was the antenna I was on with it's guy wires disappearing into the fog, and another antenna a couple of miles away that poked up out of the fog. That's the closest I ever felt to being one of God's creatures in my life. Then falling into the fog before opening, facing the tower and doing s-turns into the wind while the only things I could make out thru were a short 50-70' section of the antenna in front of me, and the occasional glimpse of guy wire as I did my s-turns between them. The sight of trees coming up below me on a side of the tower I'd never really checked out, and not knowing if they were 100' high, or 10'... (turned out they were 10.

Describe Rob Price in five words or less:Desperately trying to fit in.

I BASE jump because...Originally in the mid 80's, I thought I was pretty adept at understanding how parachutes worked and why(I was a rigger and instructor with 1000+ jumps, lots of crw and accuracy), and it just seemed like another discipline of the sport and a natural progression. The challenge was just how to adapt the parachute to open at low altitudes. (Not for me the intentional throwing of one's body through wild gyrations on exit only to save one's life at the last second with a desparate throw of an over-sized sea anchor - no thanks, I'll try to exit belly down and hope to have a long, rather tame ride down).

Excellent!

I'd like to thank everyone who has posted a bio so far. It's fun to get a feel for other jumpers I've never met and to get a little side angle on the ones I have.

Please if you haven't posted something yet, please do. You can be as anonymous as you want but it's all for fun so don't feel pressured.

Have fun, Chad

This thread actually sparked a lot of thought in my own mind. The question, "Why do you BASE jump" took me a long time to answer. It was also wicked cool seeing everybody else and a little bit of what they think. Thank you man, this was one of my favorites. Talk to you soon, we've got good news from D-Town Wink.

ZegeunerLeben & evilivan,

Happy thoughts guys.... Happy thoughts...

The bad times suck, no doubt!!! And they are definitely memorable, in a bad way... But let's all keep our heads up and remember the good times with our brothers and sisters that have passed...

I guess all I'm saying is... This has been an awesome thread. Very possitive and very uplifting... And I may be totally wrong in saying what I'm saying, and I'm sorry if I am. But I hope we can just keep this thread positive and if we want to mention our past BASE bros and sisters, lets mention their smiles and how they made us feel and not their end.

I have no right to tell anyone what to do, and I'm not trying to... I'm only asking as a favor if we can keep this thread uplifting...

Love you all Smile...

SBCmac

P.S. My deepest condolences go out to you ZegeunerLeben and your friend's family…

But recover he shall, and if anything his positive attitude about what happened is insipring to me; he's so completely optimistic about taking his life in a new direction I'm taken aback. His friends and family are more depressed about it than he is! BASE-jumpers are remarkable people. For me, there is no way but forward.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I wish I could have a Vampire girlfriend.

Who has inspired you in BASE jumping? D.D., N.K., C.P., K.S, H.C., D.P., Chad, Blake, Adam, B, any jumper stopped to talk to me as I sat watching hero after hero go off tombstone for hours, long before I was ready to join them. The boys and girls of Continuum 1. I wore out the VHS tape. Now I have the DVDs, and am honored to be in C2. And, Of course, a cute UK winsuit pilot, thanks W.

What is your most memorable BASE jumping moment? Standing at the bottom of a local A that I have yet to jump, looking up at 2000’ of steel. Watching flashing white lights in black sky, disappearing intermittently through waves of fog, feeling the vibration of the wind in the lowest wire group anchor, and walking away. knowing the 3 hour drive was worth it anyway . . .*sigh*
or- maybe climbing over the rail in twin falls for my first base jump and my partner telling me to go NOW because her camera is running out of batteries.
-maybe Nick doing a gainer next to me on a “quick” rigged rope/base jump 2-way.

Describe Calvin in five words or less: Oh! The adventures to be had…

I BASE jump because… I don’t know, I see Base jumping not just as just a sport, but as part of a massive psychological and philosophical experiment. Looking sometimes dangerously far into to the human psych, in search of something so beautiful and well hidden, I can only assume it must be the soul.

On a different note, I love pushers. Pushers are the kids who are out there exploring the new edges of any sport they are in, I have tried my hand in a fair pool of cutting edge sports. And I have never seen a more creative and diverse group of people. They are, every day, finding new more beautiful ways to fly. There is more potential here than anything I have come across. I will be here a while.

However, mostly I Base jump by default. It was BASE, or tow-in big wave surfing. And I was born 4 hours from Moab. Maybe in a few years I will move to the pacific.
