Who can climb a 250 chimney fastest...
Thats a way funny sport just climbing for the fun of it.
However at this chimney the steps felt off aprox 5m up on this metal chimney.
Any idea how to get up there whith out too much noice? I mean not that it should sound like a dark activity,but my concern is to the freindly neighbours,i know they are terrifyed by high noice so we would like to be as silence as posible.

Any ideas? we dont have much room in the car as we need place to the beers,and the guy who owns the car dont want us to use the roof for anything loong

there is a climbing method:

I was with 904 looking at a stack that had a ladder up it about 20ft from the floor. He threw up some sort of plumb line thing up to get a rope around, and down the ladder, and then with a climbing harness and the attached rope made some wierd knot thing where he could actually pull himself up.

I am sure a climber person could explain this much better than my non-climber description.

Sounds like a Prussik knot.

How to Tie a Prussik knot


Did he have to keep sliding the knot up along the climbing rope? If so, it was most likely a prussik knot. They are not the quickest thing to use, but they will get you up a rope.

A question I have thought about it:
Would it be possible for a person to use this technique to ascend their own parachute lines?

Scenario. Jumping all alone, and land in a tree, about 40 feet up, hanging by only one branch, with nothing to grab. The canopy is firmly wrapped around the branch.

Possible theory. Rig up a prussik knot with some rope (if planned ahead, and jumped with a little piece of rope), and climb up the suspension lines until you reach the branch. And if you have forgotten to bring along a little piece of rope, maybe shoelaces would work.

i were thinking of tying somthing to a rope and through it up there,but rember the neighbours.
The contest will be most fun if you´ll need to start at 0 so you need to be good at both climbing and throughing.But not to make to much noice,as we would like to come back again

Yes it is most likely a two prussiks. You need a little gear and a little knowledge to do this. Not very hard at all. If you want to make it easy, get ascenders. But they are expensive and you wont use them that much.

Prussiking up your lines? Not likely. You will need a harness loop and a footloop. stand up on the foot, slide your harness up, sit down, slide your foot up and repeat. No way you can do this with rig.
What would you tie the prussik with? a prussik is typically 4mm rope going around 10 or 11 mm rope. lines are very thin, and you need a thinner "string" to prussik with. that was a longass answer!

Well, if silence is something you are after, you could always drop a load of cash, and get some magnetic grippers. If the chimney is ferrous metal, magnetic grippers should work. Of course, we are talking a fair amount of money for the grippers.

It was rumored that someone once used suction cups to ascend a fairly tricky structure. Of course the day blaze jump got XXX busted. But then again, XXX wasn't much for object burning concern.

Suction cups may be easier to find and use then magnetic ascenders. Either way, you will need some additional training and funding to aquire the skills needed to perform either maneuver safely, and with some amount of proficiency.

Otherwise, bring 5-6 of your buddies out with you, and have them stack a chinese tower up for you. One person on top of another person's shoulders, and so on and so forth. Then, the top person can quietly attach the rope to use. The would be quieter than throwing the rope up. Then again, a human ladder may not be the easiest to build to 5m.

Just other options, no matter how expensive or ridiculous they may sound .

OK, let's focus on that problem then. How to get the rope up there.

The silence part is a trick. Maybe approach it from the other direction. If the neighbors only are concerned about unknown noise, let them know why and when they might hear some noise. Then, if noise is no longer a problem, throwing becomes an option.

Honestly, I don't think throwing a rope would be too much louder than a slider off opening. Even if you had to try throwing it 4 or 5 times, it still is not the big WHACK of an opening.

Or, use a cover up. Two ways.

First, wait til it is really windy, and then get the rope set up. The wind will howl, and cover up the noise. This is assuming you can safely leave the rope there a few days. If the site is active with people, this option is out.

OR.....have someone with a REALLY loud stereo system in their car turn it up, open the windows, and take a slow drive through the area of concern. The nieghbors will be hearing the loud stereo, and not the clink clink of metal on metal if using a carabiner to throw up a rope. Problem with this method is a nuisance to the neighbors.

that rumor is true. i know the object very well

I'm just thinking out loud here, but rather than throw the rope with a heavier end over it, use a thin piece of string, and attatch a lighter, quieter object to the end and throw that over, and then use it to pull the rope up. I'm not sure how much noise is too much, but one thought I had for a quiet weight to go on the end was a wet sponge....

What about a little ball with a lot of rubber band pulled around it? Also easy to attach to the rope, just put the end of the rope under the last rubber band. It's just 5 meter... Good luck!

There is an old steeplejack trick I have seen used in a similar situation that is fast and very easy (if you are a steeplejack).

Not easy to explain but here goes.

The bloke had a rope with a loop on the end which just about fit on the crown of his head (ie his head wouldnt fit through it).
He chucked the end of the rope up and through the bottom rung of the ladder.
Then he started pulling on the rope, and kind of leaned his body backwards so it was at 45degrees to the chimney.
Then he just walked up the side of the chimney, all the while pulling up the rope and using the pull of the rope on his head to give him traction.
Amazing stuff.

That's a real gem.. the original ascender.

I just spent 5 minutes laughing to myself thinking about a steeplejack throttling himself 16ft up a chimney.

I recently bought on eBay (for about 35€ shipment included, just go to eBay and search for "crossbow" available in Europe ) a very nice crossbow pistol, 80 lb - 36 kg force. Yet to get it in proper use, but I already modified as follows.
I drilled a hole in the tail of the arrow, passed a thin rope through such a hole. The idea is to shoot the arrow with its thin rope trailing behind and get it pass through some part of the metallic structure.
Once you collect the arrow (after having tied a thick climbing rope at the fixed end of the thin rope), you start pulling the thin rope until you get the thick climbing rope to pass trough the structure.
Once there, you fix both ends of thick climbing rope onto a safe place (beware of your knots!!!!).
Then, with climbing harness, gri-gri, jumar (with rope "pedal"), up you go.
I know, I know, it sounds too many technical stuff involved, but I am NOT the fittest climber in the world, furthermore I have got an age, so I use technology to take me where my fitter than me mates can go WITHOUT (much) technical aids!!!
If the gap to pass the thick climbing rope is not that far up above ground, you could attempt to launch the thick climbing rope itself through the structure, it varies from case to case.

These balls they use for golf are a good size I think, and they have some weight. You might have a chance that all the rubberbands around it make it bounce too much against the object.
Then a little sandbag can be usefull and also easy to create.

Just a note of caution on the "throw a rope up" deal... A couple of years ago, I encountered a similar situation with a silo. The bottom end of the ladder was low enough that I could get to it with a boost, so I did that. As soon as I touched the thing, I felt something release and suddenly I've got a handful of very loud ladder. There was a bottom part I hadn't seen, designed to be unlatched with a touch.

Same problem as yours, I didn't want to bother the neigbours with the noise. Imagine yourself 10 feet up gripping two stacked ladders with your hands, trying to feed them down with your feet in the way.

Anyway, I figure a rope thrown over would have released the thing, too. Watch that.

I would use 2 of my teleskopic tentpoles. If I fold them together they are about 3 meter each, use tape to connect them together. Attach the rope to a big (fishing-)hook, and attach the hook to the pole. Use tape again, that way you can remove the tentpole when the hook is on the ladder. For climbing i would recommend a mechanical brake, jumar.. etc. Maybe you can attach a "rope-ladder" ( taustige) to the hook ???

With the golf ball idea, how about making a lightweight skyball tennis ball, not with lead, but something that would be quiet and just heavy enough? Same idea with the light weight string, then a climbing rope...
