Cable Controlled BASE jumping . . . ?
I know systems like these have been used since stuntman Dar Robertson did the CN Tower in the mid-80s, but they are now advertising this as a, "Cable Controlled BASE Jump,"

Anyone think there could be implications to Bridge Day here? Like allowing the spectators to join in the fun, or worse, they tell us to get lost, and just let the wuffos do the jumping . . .

Interesting selling point. I hate life. I'll stick to the canopy.

I think it's better to lower people to the ground with a cable than it is to give them a tan a push them off a bridge with a round... for my mother anyway.

heck yea, I would try it also. Just case base is the best does not mean that we can not enjoy other nonbase things.

It's gay. I've done a couple of dozen of these. The UK Parachute Regiment uses exactly the same set up to simulate landing a round during their parachute training.

You're not falling - you’re essentially being lowered on a rope. There's no free fall before being slowed for landing; as you fall you simply turn a fan which creates air resistance - this happens all the way down and thus slows your descent.

It's gay and it’s about as far from BASE jumping as sliding down a really long banister.

If it's so gay, then by the looks of this other post maybe Tmkoder should give it a try! Wink

Your post cracks me up. I know the things your talking about, they have them at Headcorn parachute club in the UK to train students to PLF. They are pretty shite . When it was rained out the last time i was down there, a friend and i practiced 2way exits.CrazyCrazy

In all fairness i think this is a bit different, although i may be wrong. I saw a programme on stunts a few months ago and they used a cable controlled device for a tall building fall stunt. The fall is pretty fast and you would feel like you were plummetting. At the last moment (well not quite the last moment) the brakes kick in and you get stopped quite abruptly. Like i said, this may not be what they are using here but if it is, it wouldn't be quite as gay as the PLF training fans you refer to.

Sliding down banisters is pretty hardcore dude. You get it wrong and you're in a world of pain. Common banister injuries include upper thigh friction burns, chaffing of the knees, banister scrotum dismount syndrome and gooch rip. I think the military versions are a degree higher/faster/steeper than the ones used on the DZ

If you want a quick thrill on you hols then do this, or bungee/reverse bungee, or deathslide or (the other swingy-pendulumy-thingy)

Can you sell it to someone as a BASE experience?
-{ pictures young kid watching FB doing his latest (need tounge-in cheek smiley) groundbreaking feat on FOX }- "Hey Mommy thats what I did"

Seems as far away from a BASE experience as when they shoved Heather Swann out of the cable car with a bungee cord tied around her waist (no disrespect to someone that got injured intended but WTF! where they thinking)

Quite true.

A trick from an old amateur banister slider: travel with windex and paper towels. When you find a wicked banister you want to ride, whip out the cleaning supplies and remove the human slime that typically makes banisters slow.
