"If I only had a dollar for every person that told me BASE jumpers are crazy, I would be rich” reports Jason Bell, Bridge Day 2004 BASE Jumping Co-Organizer.

Over 450 BASE jumpers and up to 250,000 spectators are expected to attend this years Bridge Day on Saturday, October 16, 2004. The New River Gorge Bridge is the world's second longest single arch bridge, providing the launch point for six hours (9am-3pm EST) of legal, safe BASE jumps. Jumpers from all over the world will be lined up to take their turn leaping from the 876’ tall New River Gorge Bridge. Most will fall from the bridge for 3-4 seconds before deploying their parachute. Then they’ll spend the next 20-30 seconds floating down to the designated landing zone located at the waters edge.

Bridge Day is the largest extreme sports event in the world held on the third Saturday in October every year in Fayetteville, West Virginia. Bridge Day is unique in that it is the only day visitors may walk across the bridge, BASE jumpers can parachute from the railing and rappellers are allowed to descend and ascend fixed ropes. Vendors line both ends of the bridge selling stained glass, crafts, shirts, photos, and refreshments. Bridge Day is West Virginia's largest one-day festival and is rated one of the top 100 festivals in North America.

BASE is an acronym for the four types of fixed objects that are utilized for these foot-launched skydives: (B)uilding, (A)ntenna, (S)pan, and (E)arth. Jumpers first skydive hundreds of times from aircraft before attempting to BASE jump, which is undoubtedly the world's most extreme sport. Unlike skydiving, BASE jumpers often use only one parachute, as the lower exit altitudes of 200’-1200’ do not normally permit deployment of a reserve parachute. After leaping from each of the four different types of fixed objects, jumpers can apply for a BASE number. BASE numbers have been awarded for over 20 years to more than 900 people worldwide.

BASE jumpers have jumped from the New River Gorge Bridge every year since the first Bridge Day on November 8, 1980 (the only exception being the cancellation of Bridge Day 2001 shortly after 9/11). The first Bridge Day saw five skydivers making BASE jumps from the bridge in the early days of the sport of BASE jumping. Over the years, Bridge Day became the place for thousands of skydivers to make their first BASE jump. It is also the largest gathering of BASE jumpers each year, complete with first jump seminars, packing classes, a BASE gear trade show, and a film festival.

If you were to interview the average BASE jumper at Bridge Day 2004, you would probably find that person to be around 36 years of age and college-educated. This person has more than likely performed well over 1200 skydives and more than 65 BASE jumps from various objects. For every 88 males that take the plunge at Bridge Day, you’ll find 12 females along side them ready to enjoy the ride as well. Last year, over 400 jumpers made 836 jumps with only a few minor injuries. “I’m happy that we broke the 800 jump barrier last year and I’m looking forward to one day breaking the 1000 jump mark with no injuries in six hours of jumping”, says co-organizer Bill Bird.

Making a return this year will be the popular 16’ commercial aluminum diving board, first introduced last year. “Last year, I finally got the chance to make a BASE jump by springing myself over the edge like an Olympic diver. I was pretty nervous, much more than a normal BASE jump, but it is a jump I’ll always remember” says Jason. BASE jumping aerialists from countries as far away as Australia and Russia will again travel to Fayetteville, WV to amaze the spectators with multiple flips and twists before they deploy their one and only parachute. The Vertical Visions team also plans to have a landing accuracy contest with cash prizes, a BASE jumping video festival, and some special jumps that should make for an exciting Bridge Day 2004 for both jumpers and spectators.

All BASE jumping activities at Bridge Day 2004 will be coordinated by Vertical Visions LLC, owned by West Virginia BASE jumper and skydiver Jason Bell (BASE #428, D-16725). Vertical Visions was awarded the Bridge Day 2004 BASE Jumping Coordinator position by the Bridge Day Commission in December 2003. Jason will be assisted by his wife Jennifer, Charleston native Bill Bird (D-6977), and over 50 staff members.

Jumper registration begins on July 1, 2004 at http://www.bridgeday.info, a website dedicated to Bridge Day BASE jumping. It is expected that all 450 slots will be sold within weeks due to the immense popularity of the New River Gorge Bridge with the BASE jumping community. “With only a handful of quality, legal objects for us to practice our sport, Bridge Day will probably be a popular place for new and old jumpers for many years to come”, reports Jason . “I just wish we could do it more than six hours a year”.

For questions regarding Bridge Day BASE jumping, please contact Jason Bell at jbell@bridgeday.info or visit www.bridgeday.info. For further information on Bridge Day 2004, please visit the official Bridge Day website located at http://www.officialbridgeday.com.

Thanks!

Does it seem a little strange that we can pay $70 for a staff pass?
Shortcut
Re: [TomAiello] Bridge Day 2004 Registration Starts July 1st
Thanks Tom.
Historically, 300 slots are sold on the first day. Then it takes about 12 more days to sell the remaining slots. I'll keep you all informed!

PS. Hey 460, when I give my staff members a coupon code, the $70 staff passes end up being free. Staffers always get free slots since they've earned it. This is just my way to make sure only true staff members register for a staff slot.

As far as I know they are not. They are supposed to have your picture on them, and there is a background check of some kind, so it'd be hard to transfer that stuff. Maybe if you sold it far enough in advance for the background stuff to be done on the new person.

I'm sure Jason will let you know when he gets a chance. I imagine right now he's a bit busy.

Re: [TomAiello] Bridge Day 2004 Registration Starts July 1st
I got my pass last year last minute. Like in October. Jason said it was ok as long as the jumper that it was being transfered to had already had a background check during the previous year. So if you are a new jumper probably not. If you have been to bridge day in the past two years then probably so.

There is a possiblity that this has changed this year though. Of course Super Server Man will reply when he gets out from under the desk looking for the plug.

OK folks, here's the deal.
I've had 3 different servers for each of the last 3 Bridge Day's. I got a new one this year from the same company as was used last year. The new server crashed. It went from a 2 to about 200 around the 2 o'clock hour. We are currently adding 512Megs of RAM to ward off all you compulsive refreshersWink

Registration should open in about 1 hour from now as soon as the memory is added.

Once again, nobody has been permitted to register yet. Plus, keep in mind that the first 113 registrants are all bundled into the first group, so it doesn't matter if you're #1 or #113, you can still get off the bridge in the first wave.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience!!!

The safest way to go is still to take a real First Jump Course, because then there is direct guidance every step of the way.

Everything seems to be working properly now. About 100 have registered. If you didn't enter your cc info and get to the invoice screen, then nothing has been charged to your card.

In reply to:
Is there a certain point in the process where you would be considered registered even if you couldn't give cc details?

Ugh... fell asleep at the switch, but I think I got through.

WARNING: STUPID QUESTION FORTHCOMING: Is the system keeping track of inventory, i.e. does the server remember how many have registered?

--> So if I have an invoice number is it safe to assume I have a slot?

Thanks;

259 slots sold as of 8:40pm EST, which is pretty normal for the first day.

Just to give you all an idea of what group you'll be in:
Order #1626 was jumper #1 (start of first group)
Order #1714 was jumper #113 (end of first group)
Order #1823 was jumper #259 (middle of second group)

There will be four groups of about 113 jumpers. All jumpers from a specific group will jump before we move onto the second group.

Above numbers are approximate. Thanks to everyone who kept me laughing at their posts throughout the day! Have fun everyone and cya at the bridge.

PS. Since my server was not very nice to many of you today, I'll let you in on a secret.......we are working on getting Jean Boenish to attend and speak at Bday this year. How cool would that be?

Re: [skydiver30960] Bridge Day 2004 Registration Starts July 1st
If you have an invoice #, you DO have a slot.
The system does keep track of inventory. We started with 450 slots, and there are about 181 left according to the website (we've sold approximately 269 so far)

Ummm, Jason, I am not that good with math or anything, but I think you might have gotten a little fried today.

When I start with 1625 as 0 and add 113, I get 1738 as the cut-off for the first group.

I add 113 more and get 1851 for the cut-off for the second group.

113 more makes 1964 the cut-off for the third group.

Also, when I add jumper 259 to 1625, I get 1884 which puts him in the third group.

It might be something to look out for, in case your software is trying to sell like 600 slots or something. That wouldn't be a very good thing.

Wasn't there a 400-jumper limit in the past few years (plus staff)? or am I just making shit up in my wacky little brain? Is there more time this year? Did I miss something?

Anyway, you still kick ass, brotherman!

cya up there

Re: [mnischalke] Bridge Day 2004 Registration Starts July 1st
Some orders have 2, 3, or 4 jumpers on them.....that is why the order numbers don't equal the same number of jumpers.

We took 400 jumpers last year and had some lull time around 2pm. Nobody was in line wanting to jump. So we made it 450 this year. Plus, we always have a bunch of no-shows due to various reasons.

Ahhhhaaaa. Hadn't thought about the multiple jumper orders. I am even more confused than I was before.

Just a thought....
On your website it states that if you jumped at Bridge Day 2002 or 2003 you don't have to supply your SSN or Passport #'s to be able to jump because they ALREADY have your information to do the BACKGROUND CHECK.
I thought that the supplied SSN's were destroyed or disgarded after the initial background check for that year. How can they do a check if we are no longer in the 'system' or are we still in the 'system'?
Looks like we was lied toUnsure

Re: [base570] Bridge Day 2004 Registration Starts July 1st
From the Bridge Day site....
Background Checks
Background checks are needed because jumpers will be the only people permitted to carry "backpacks" on the bridge. When jumpers submit their names, date of birth, and SSN or passport numbers (if not a US citizen), this information will be used for a background check performed by the Sheriff. No background checks are needed if you registered and jumped at Bridge Day 2002 or 2003. Situations that would disqualify you from jumping would include: Outstanding felony warrants, previous arrests for explosives, terrorist-related activities, or similar records. Misdemeanor warrants for items such as traffic tickets, or prior arrests or convictions for BASE jumping offenses will NOT affect your jumping at Bridge Day. All SSN and passport number information will be destroyed immediately after background checks are performed.

Isn't this a contradictory statement??? Are you destroying them or not? My guess is notMad

It's not about giving the SS# out; it's about being lied to and taken advantage of by the government.

If the back ground check has already taken place, is there a reason to do another one? If not, then the numbers aren't needed any more.

Just a thought.

Re: [base570] Bridge Day 2004 Registration Starts July 1st
I delete all DOB, SSN, and passport data each year.
However, I do still have a list of jumpers names from past years, so if you were on the BDay 2002 or 2003 jumper list, they WILL NOT do a background check on you again. We'll just make sure you were on the BDay 2002 or 2003 roster.....

Last year I flew into Beckley which is probably 30 minutes south of Fayetteville. That is where any commercial flights come into which may be useful for rides, etc...plus there is a instrument approach which came in handy!

Airports?
If you're looking for commercial flights, try Charleston, WV (CRW) - 1 hr drive or Pittsburgh (PIT) - 3.5 hour drive.

I'm not sure about Beckley? Do they have a "real" airport, or can you just fly your own plane in there?

If you're flying your own plane, there is actually a small airport about 2 miles from the bridge where "$5 Frank" used to fly at.
