Felix on the news
Felix was on the Dutch TV news last night.
He was sayd to be the first that base-jumped from a new bridfe in France
They also showed his lowest basejump in the world again (from Jesus-arm)

Re: [mccordia] Felix on the news
Lowest BASE jump?
I've said it many times before.
Steve Ball, early 1990's, 63' cliff in Ohio, USA.
It would be nice if Felix stopped making those false claims.

Steve exited over land, opened, and flew for about 1 second into knee deep water.

How long was Felix's canopy ride????Wink

Exactly how high is Felix's jump??? I have watched a total of 4 static-lines and one TARD off of a local 110ft. Span
It was -15C and the landing was rock-solid, frozen Canadian soil! Jesus can't be that much lower if at all!? Canopy times were probably around 3 seconds.

Try again, Peter Gambs, Germany. Freefell 59 feet on a system I developed for him. By all means qualifying as a BASE jump. I measured the height at 18m. He also did some lower freefalls but I didn´t measure them.
The height of Felix' jump was 29m above obstacles, and once he cleared those obstacles on the opening surge he could fly 710m down the mountain. STI was around 2.5secs.

What kind of system allows one to freefall a 59' object? Probably not a conventional rig.
I guess Felix now has the 3rd lowest jump...Wink
This lowest jump crap is simply that....crap. It only gets brought up when Felix babbles to the media.

It's a rocket deployed rig. There's video of some of Peter's jumps on one of the German BASE web sites. Pretty cool stuff.

Yeah, since when is he exempt from the rules? He himself says he's well-respected amongst BASE jumpers (he's the ONLY person who's said that). I guess he is, since no one has kicked his ass for burning sites in the worst way possible and discrediting others.

Hi Jason,
Point a. How soon we forget. Did you already forget the time Felix took some hrs off to give you and your friends a span and a cliff, defying the ranger proceeding in a car chase up the mountain? He couldn´t even stick around for dinner. How much did he charge you? NOTHING. He was willing to get busted to help you guys jump.
Point b. Red Bull purchased the mountain to stop the logging there and it is now open to jumping and ummm.... Felix is a direct cause of this because he did jump it first.
Point c. How is one to know who did the highest, lowest, longest etc if it´s not claimed?
Point d. Read the starter post again. " Felix was on the Dutch TV news last night.
He was sayd to be the first that base-jumped from a new bridfe in France
They also showed his lowest basejump in the world again (from Jesus-arm) "

Phrases like "He was sayd to be the first" (not that HE said that he was first). "His lowest basejump in the world" (Not THE lowest BASEjump in the world).

If Felix would have charged me for that jump, I would have LAUGHED. If any BASE jumper comes to my neck of the woods, I would never even THINK of charging them just to show them my exit points. Why doesn't Felix reply to this rather than having his friend defend him?

Felix was good to us in 1999 when showing us his two exit points in Austria, but he has been disgracing the BASE world since then. If you doubt this, just read through the posts on this forum.

So, you didn't see the "channel crossing" video? It does, in fact, claim that the Jesus statue is THE lowest BASE jump. This claim is also made in many articles about him. This discredits the many people that have done lower BASE jumps.

Going back and looking at your posts, I'm going to avoid starting a "burn" discussion, being that you have a different definition of what a "burn" is. According to what most consider a burn, I see complaints about him burning a number of objects -- even last year. Following this forum's rules, no one names the sites (or the names are edited).

If this is the case, wouldn't this qualify as a "burn"? I don't know the story behind this particular S or if it's any hotter now. If it was already jumped, and it was not known to Felix, then the locals were evidently not contacted. Would they even think or try to contact the locals? I guess money and cameras makes for ethical exceptions.

There was a S in Cali that I did my first jumps off of. It is pretty high profile in terms of traffic. This means that you have to avoid getting caught, not that it is a publicly recognized BASE object. If someone brought a camera crew out there and got it on the news, even if permitted, that object would undoubtedly become hot. People (specifically authorative figures), would be looking out for BASE activity where they weren't looking before. Then there's always the risk of skydivers doing first BASE solos because they now know about this local object, and yada yada. Just some thoughts.

We jumped it twice now and well before Felix did! I KNOW this for a fact, because the roaddeck wasn´t completed yet when we jumped it and on this video it is! One of my old posts is about the same object! http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1097421;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;guest=5986788

We also jumped one of the cranes that was standing next to one of the pillars twice, already last winter. I know some guys who did the crane before us, but I don´t know of anybody who jumped the roaddeck before us. But there MUST BE some French guys out there that have done it before anybody else as it is in their backyard!

I don´t care to be the first one or anything, but I don´t like it when somebody claims to be first while he isn´t!

Felix...come in please....Felix...!

from what I hear it was the TV station that stated he was the first and not Felix himself.......... things happen for ratings!

............ I was with some of the people that jumped this bridge (well the cranes) some time ago (august 2003)........... and since then lots of other UKers and French and belgium jumpers have done it.

Wh distrust the media most of the time and then accept what they say other times? that makes no sense..............

We all know Felix has some dodgy coverage from jumps - but how much is him and how much is it the media reporting it?

Michael

PS) there are lots more great spans in france to jump than this one!!!

Re: [BASE813] Felix on the news
Media helps him for sure...

He did this jump in daylight, while the coverage claims he has to do it all very sneaky...

It´s impossible to jump this bridge in daylight (too much security). Most likely it´s all set-up for him, like the Patronas jump. That jump was also arranged for him (Patronas/Red Bull!!! see attached picture)

Re: [321Cya] Felix on the news
I've only had one conversation with Felix. I didn't think much of him. I don't think much of him as a jumper either. But I shouldn't judge him unless I really got to know him!!!

As for all his claims for records and firsts, we all know the reality. I'm not a great fan of the way he has impacted the sport. On the other hand, many jumpers are the same. How often do you see "I was the first to . . ." posted on the various BASE forums. When the reality is many have been before.

Most of the French and Norgies seem to be the most humble on the world. They get on and do the jumps.

But what the jumping community does not understand is that Felix has a job to promote his sponsor and their product. The general public would have no idea if Felix is the real thing or not. Whether he is full of shit or not does not matter. He does the job of product promotion exceptionally well.

I would like to see Felix actually compete with other jumpers and get some skill credibility on his resume. I don't see that happening.

Whether your first or last, enjoy the experience.

It was on Fox News last night around 7:30PM EST being told as the highest bridge jump in the world about 700'. Got me thinking about the one day legal span in the eastern US which is much higher than that. Goes to show that some reporters need to do a bit more research.

Re: [base428] Felix on the news
So you never responded to my question in "point c." or responded to "b" or "d.", Jason.
I´ll briefly outline it again, as I would like to ask your opinion on these points.
Point b. Felix opened his site to the world.. What do you think about this? Privately owned and you and all others have permission to jump there. Is this a future of legal BASE?
Point c. How is one to know who did the highest, lowest, longest etc if it´s not documented in an accessable manner? How does one document it in an accessable manner? (Felix does have documentation on his jump). What about the johnny-come-lately record breakers, even you didn´t know about the last 2 that were since year 2000. How would one rectify this lack of info?
Point d. Read the starter post again. What makes people jump to conclusions faster than exciting journalism? You got taken in by it too. Why are people so gullible to the media´s entertainment? McCordia seems to me like he is objective in stating what he saw on Dutch TV. How do we prevent this, Should we? Do we need to have a figure to poke fun at as Manbird said?

Jason, you are highly experienced in not only the sport but adminstration of it also. What would you do? I respect your opinion and am interested in your ideas.

In reply to:

Yes, we do. The same way Stern needs to bitch about Imus (sp?), we need to bitch about Felix.

Pretty much everyone (myself included) bases their opinion of the guy on what they see in the media (though I did encounter him once at Perris, very briefly). Sure the producers sensationalize everything, but the vast majority of stuff we make fun of comes from his own mouth. On the Baffin Islands trip, the commentary was sensationalistic, but the jumpers were very humble and accurate in their descriptions of what was happening. Everyone but Felix, who had to, as Homer would say, "embiggen" everything. In anything that is Felix-only, he's no better, if not worse, than the overall commentary in terms of death, death, death, me, me, me.

The real "danger", if any, is that he puts himself (or is put) in a position where he speaks for the sports of skydiving and BASE, but never gives an accurate portrayal. I think that, more than anything, is what pisses off jumpers. Whether he means to or not, Felix deceives the public about our sports. IMO, it's an abuse of the resources and access to the public that he has.

Not knowing Felix or his, badassed?, stunts?, as well as some, I can very much attest to this. I am a big GoFast person, BUT. I have to say, with some authority, that Red Bull treats it's atheletes well! (I've heard of them even bailing thier BASE jumpers out of jail!!!). The number of BASE ventures they have funded will never compare with the tiny number, some of you folks, find out and gripe about. GoFast, RedBull, Fucking Gatorade, I don't care. It takes some direct cash to pull off a modern, post 911, BASE event. "B-Day", "RGB-Day, Malaysia and many other cutting edge events. All I'm saying is, let's not get some kickass -BASE Event/Athlete sponsors-, and the individual jumpers get too mixed up for the individual jumpers botched info and hype. Why not just get the clowns ass and bit it hard, so he learns how to operate on other sites, outside Austria. Simply give him a couple of hard kicks in the ass, and he might learn. Next time he will have bodyguards on his hikes, but thats only the old movie stars that are to old to do anything (seems like F likes to pose on pictures with them, haha). Edit to add: But his write up on Jeb and Luigi dock in this thread was pretty much the funniest thing I've ever read on these forums.

In fact, it's so funny I'm going to cut and paste it here, even though it's both off topic and a cross-post. See what you can get away with when you're buddies with the moderator (or you _are_ the moderator)?

In reply to:
Luis Cani was expecting a new parachute from Icarus. He received a package in the mail containing a red t-shirt with a note taped to it that read, "We're sorry, production is taking longer than expected, please accept this t-shirt as an apology." He was so excited that he didn't read the note, and mistakenly took the t-shirt for a skydive.

Jeb Corliss, a man reputed to have been expelled from a secret ninja society after assassinating one of its leaders, was on the aircraft.

"Luis said he was opening high, so I had to go out first," reports Corliss, "that's what wingsuit BASE ninjas are supposed to do."

Jeb Corliss (known behind his back as "JC3") had quite a surprise early in his skydive. "I was in the middle of a badass flatspin when Luis shows up right next to me with that damn t-shirt over his head!" says Jeb, whose true identity is unknown. "I was freakin' out and flew over to tell him the dire situation he was in, but he just zoomed right past me! There was no way to catch him, so I did 75 gainers."

We caught up with Luis to tell us what happened from there. "The canopy was very fast," says the horse jockey turned parachutist, "and I couldn't stop thinking about frying bananas."

"I saw Jeb on the way down and it was very annoying. He was bothering me, so I kicked him in the hand." Luis rested on his heels before returning to his tip-toes to say, "I needed to focus, because this parachute was very small and I was wearing a lead safe. I checked my altimeter and I was at 7,000', so I started my hook turn. Five seconds later, at 1,500', I initiated a flare, and felt the parachute hit the back of my head right before I landed."

Upon landing, Luis received massages from fourteen foreign celebrities that no American, save Jeb Corliss, has ever even heard of. He was then escorted by rocket to a private island, and was unavailable for further comment.

No fatality on this bridge. The fatality a few months ago was on another bridge (french jumper, beginner, supposed bridle/arm entanglement).
