Easily Accessable
Just thought I would post something to discuss: BASE seems to be rather easily accessable. I beleive in the past year more and more people are getting into BASE (more experienced people may say this has been the case over the past few years) - I can only speak of the UK, but when speaking to new jumpers having taken a FJC and coming back wanting to jump, I find that sometimes the fundamental knowledge I would expect from someone starting to BASE jump is sadly lacking.
I know that I have only been jumping for 2 years, but I also researched everything I could and spoke to experienced jumpers for 2 years before this time - so much so that on my FJC the technical subjects covered were just confirming what I had already learnt and was nothing new to me (unlike the two other people on my course). I also had spent the last 6 months of my weekend skydiving focusing on the CR canopy drills and doing hop n pops from 6k all geared toward my FJC (to much piss taking from people who did not know what I was doing it for)
I had done this as I was told by people this is what should be expected before starting to jump, but it seems (from converstations and also some recent posting by new jumpers) that the basis of knowledge before starting to jump is lacking..........
I would be interested in what others think of this.......... certainly in the UK we are getting so many jumpers through, that we are being swamped. There are some nice objects in the UK for new jumpers - but generally we have some low and gnarly jumps that need special attention. Lack of preparation and knowledge will get you hurt on these.............
Is BASE too easily accessable at this time? do people not have to work so hard to get jumping nowadays and is this a bad thing?
just interested in thoughts and discussion............
Michael
PS) and yeah I know - I got hurt!!!
