burning damege to breaklines
I just had a closer look at my lines(just removed 5th line),and desided to make an hard inspection as i already worked on it.. i found that my controllines has smaller burn marks were my Tailgate sourounds the lines.
Im wondering about this as the conopy in total has aprox 130slider off jumps. And i think its might abit early it get damegede...

Its a fox 265 vtec(no covers)multi. It had the 5th line mod on at the 120 jumps(which were modifyed after DW directions by my rigger).

Does slider down really eat that much on the lines?

It aint so much that i start worry on the damegede, but it has been noticed...

Any?

Look at the upper outboard trailing edges of the canopy for line burns as you might be getting tail flutters. (Your uppers momentarily (are maybe) sweeping across the top surfaces in the corners).

Check the tailpocket Velcro as it won't last as long as you would hope, and it’s not enough that you can pick up the tailpocket and the lines don’t fall out, as the snatch force of a BASE pilot is awesome. And check for general slump and dump in the tailpocket itself.

When we first started to pack for BASE we are thinking open, open, open, and it’s funny now in a way, but as we came to terms with what reefing actually is, we started thinking don’t open, don’t open, don’t open. In order for reefing to work correctly, and I know it’s scary, you almost have to put another wrap in for Jesus, and not leave one out . . .

so as i understand i can pack my lines too loose?

The velcro is in good shape, infact after the upper Q about my velcro i asked a master rigger about his oppinion of the velcro, and he did after inspection say that there were nothing to come for(it were all good),the same as i meant it were.

The damegede is at the same spot and no other parts of the gear has been dammeged.Just makes me wonder...

Actualy my first thourght were that the one wrap whith the rubberband up under the tailpocket might were the problem, but the line dont gonear that place(as its arround the tailgate the problem is)

How do you guys set your tailgate? loose or hard, not about larkshead and so,but how hard the tailgate itself is arround the lines, usaly mine is not so hard so the lines will be abel to move inside the tailgate.why i dont know but can it bee a issue??

Its a litel detail that actualy dont mean much as it aint bad at all,but the fact that i want to avoid further dammegede to the gear drives me cracy as i cant figure how.. oh wait i am cracy.. it makes me normal thenTongue

Can you explain this?

I've never been able to make a tailgate rubber band tight enough to cause problems on a freefall jump.

I've not seen burns from the tailgate. I have seen many 5 line canopies with burns on the upper control lines. I'm not sure what causes it, but I've only really seen it on 5 line canopies.

May sound stupid, but it may be the rubber band type (natural, polymers, copolymers). The energy dissipated by the rubber band could be sufficient to burn it and then lines. But that should not happen with the usual skydive or base bands. So, I am lost.

When I set my tail gate I make it snug. Thats just the way I have always done it.

Just for the sake of discussion. I remember reading a while back a thread on tying break cord. I have searched and searched and I cant find it. However if I remember right It said that you should tie it snug around the attachment point and the bridle. The reason for this was to load it evenly, and promote consistency. I wonder if these same principles would apply to the Tail Gate. Maybe someone else will be able to dig this old thread up. I think it was written by Dd0g. I don't know if it was here or at blinc though.

do a search and there are some posts about tailgate hang ups after some recent discussion about the bands and wraps people take on a tailgate...........

I had an interesting discussion with Faber last time he stayed at my house about tailgates and bands etc....... as for taking "more than 3 wraps" I would never do that - I do some low freefalls (or I did before this time in my life) and I would only ever take 2 wraps - over 3 seems like over kill and may cause problems in the lower end, especially if you are taking larks head etc........

when freefalling low end, any small problem becomes a big Mutha Fuckin problem........
