MP3 on an A
I'm curious if it would be a bad idea to take my iPod on my local A to keep me entertained while I climb. Would the transmission from the A be bad for or interfere with my mp3 player? Any help is appreciated. Thanks Wink

I'd bring it. Let me know it "that" A does any thing. Around 400 feet are where the most dishes are so don't rest too long in that area Wink

MP3 should be ok but if it's highly radiating, like the top of a certain freestander, it will speed up and slow down an electric motor and cancel out any video until you drop away from it.

Don't have to worry about that b/c I'm not into microwaving my insides so I stay away from said freestander. Especially after hearing about how hot it is at the top. I've hear someone say that it was so hot that he thought his pilot chute would melt. Hmmm... sounds like to much radiation to me.

Thanks for the info, I'll let you know what happens or if you come along tomorrow you'll find out sooner.

just out of interest, if your wearing a walkman / mp3 player etc on the climb - then how are you able to hear if anyone approaches?

just a thought........

Every time I've been "approached", I saw them long before I heard them. The wind and sounds on our antennas pretty much drown everything else out.

I don't think that you'd be able to hear anyone approaching while you were climbing even if you weren't wearing headphones. Now if someone is coming up the ladder from below either its another jumper (the more likely scenario) or you are already busted so it doesn't really matter anyway. Plus I'm probably going to have only one ear piece in so that I can hear my walkie talkie if need be.

ok.......... fair point - maybe its because the towers I climb are low enough to hear a car approach....

I forgot you USA guys have the pleasure of some pretty large A's!! Wink

If there is a strong magenetical buildup on the A, there's a good chance you'll come down with a nice clean (un)formated Ipod, and no mp3's left....

Ipod uses a normal HD inside right?
I'd make sure you backup your, eh..cd-backups before you try it :)

sorry dude im all whith mac here. aprox 1 month ago i went up in a 300fter half way up a guard showed up whith his dog(in a car) the dog showed that somthing were in the A(extact were i started my climb),he(the guardTongue ) started to use his flash light to see if he couls spot anything, lucky he couldnt and off they went,i heard them way before they walked out of the car,and i that way could stop climbing(ie not making any noice)and make my self stealth.I were never busted at the sight,if i had heard mp3 or radio it probaly wouldnt be the same...

so why do you guys need music? you dont like to think clear of the facts of your jumping solos and what can happen.. he he the pure silence will make you feel alone and vouneble as you actualy are at that place,to me listen to music will take that factor away from you.

just my oppinionSmile

I personally don't bring them on climbs but a couple folks I know do. Pretty much for the reasons you give... I like to take in the environment and sort of just be with my thoughts, the sounds and the sights. It's kind of meditative.

But I don't really knock the ones who do bring them. A fair number of our climbs are 900-1200 feet. So having a little music might help you forget that you're totally exhausted with 500 feet left to climb. Wink Plus I could see it also getting you into a climbing rhythm.

Good point on the memory getting wiped if you got too close to a transmitter.

We jumped a 2000-footer just the other day with big arbors that you walk out on (in, actually, they're huge) and jump off of. They have enormous transmitters on the end. So it sort of looks like this big candelabra on top of the tower.

I didn't notice anything but douggie said his fillings started tingling. My guess is an MP3 player in that environment wouldn't be such a hot idea. Shocked

I didn't notice anything personally.

But maybe that has to do with the fact that my brain was fried long ago. Crazy
