Fatality in Russia on May 3
Yo !

There was a BASE fatality in Russia near Saratov on May 3. Below are relevant technical details:

31 year old male, 80m (265ft) tower, stowed. PC hesitation, deployment sequence started too late. I am told it was his third base jump.

I do not have the name at this point. Please try to refrain from the obvious comments.

bsbd!

Yuri.

Re: [KevinMcGuire] Fatality in Russia on May 3
It was 300 ft GSM antenna. He used 2-pin rig and 46 F111 PC. It was his 3rd jump (without standart FJC). They have video but it's impossible to get it now.

Any who can confirm one of the 2 different statements?

were it 265ft or 300ft?

were he stowed whith a 46´F-111 pc? or were he handheld?

were it a different pc?and then stowed?

how deep were his delay?(only matter if we know the alti he jumped from).

Any?

is there a tread at Blinc i didnt see yet?

Oops! Sorry I made a mistake. There was 80 meters (265 ft) antenna.
300 ft is the altitude of his second object.

The information in details will coming soon.

I know detail are few but I have to say that this fatality thread is the tinnest I have ever seen. who was the jumper? Who were his mentors? How many other were on the load? Was it day or night? what make of rig was he jumping? Is there any thing more to learn from this? I'm not trying to be morbid or anything I just think more should be said.

Re: [KevinMcGuire] Fatality in Russia on May 3
just short from me, what I´ve read:
80 meters
46" PC
stowed
2-pin-rig

for me, there are two facts in that:
80 meters is low (so a 46 PC makes sense!)
if jumping a 46 PC, going stowed is not recommended by the manufacturers (as far as I know).
blame me if I am wrong

The jumper which has the info about is out of connection now. I know that they have the video but I'm not sure that it would be possible to get it.
I'll send the details whan they will show it or talk something about that incident.
I think I or they will send all info directly to Fatality List

Valhalla is getting stronger.

It is a day for celebration in Valhalla and a sad day for us still in this life ...

My condolences to his family, dark times it is ...

It may also be that the deceased was not comfortable enough, due to the nature of the exit point, to go hand-held.

Nope, looks like you read it right. The combination of the three just seems like a recipe for trouble.

Whenever you go stowed, the chances of having a PC hesitation increase. I have seen people go stowed from 240. I personally wouldn't do it, but it doesn't leave much of a safety margin if you do have a hesitation.

Throw a delay in there and, well...

if i understand you correct Craig, then you say if the exit point demanded a stowed jump? correct?

if so i just dont understand why he jumped the place on his 3 jump...

ill stop wondering and wait for some facts

It may have to do with "cultural" norms.

I have the distinct impression that jumping in Russia is a bit, shall we say, "edgier" than in most other places.

Re: [outrager] Fatality in Russia on May 3
Condolences to friends and family. A sad loss, whatever the circumstances.

There are times when going stowed is objectively safer than handheld. While the manufacturers might not recommend, some of those same manufacturers also say their gear isn't designed for sub-300 foot jumping at all. Perhaps sound advice at some level, but disconnected from the reality of current jumping procedure and knowledge.
