I have a question: would a smaller large mesh slider (smaller than the stock one you get) slow the opening down or speed it up. One would think that it would speed up the opening, much like putting a smaller slider on your skydiving canopy. But with the smaller large mesh slider, wouldn't it stay up longer on opening due to the lines not being able to expand as wide at line stretch. Getting pounded on 6 sec. slider up 265 fox vtech. any ideas or comments? Jake Neises

I do not recommend changing slider size from the manufacturers spec unless you are willing to take the risk of being a test jumper.


Move to a small hole mesh (marquisette) slider. BR can easily send you one if you give them a call.

Tried a small mesh slider, no difference really. Did not go to a smaller canopys slider, rather another mfg. who makes sliders smaller for their canopys wich are the same size in sq ft. ie a dagger 266 slider is alot smaller than a fox 265 slider, ALOT different.

Yes, but are the lines of a dagger '266 the same length as a fox '265? How about the aspect ratio? Did you try emailing Todd about this, I've found the BR people very prompt and helpful with feedback for questions. (I'm sure the other manufacturers are too, I've only dealt with BR so far)

It's been my general experience that a smaller slider yields faster openings, but I don't think I'd be willing to apply that to every canopy without hearing from someone who has more experience switching them. I've only played with changing slider size on one old PD-235 7 cell--never on a BASE canopy.

Changing the dimensions of the slider can have unpredictable results. As Tom said, you're a test jumper again.

The real problem you are trying to solve here is opening speed. Have you tried leaving the slider alone and just rolling the nose some?

I have a FOX 265 (un-vented until this winter) and have been using a standard "large hole" mesh slider and 5 rolls on each side for terminal jumps - and I jump a relatively heavy top-mounted video camera on most slider-up jumps.

Sorry to hear you're getting pounded, that's no fun (in BASE, anyway...) even tho it is often part of the ride.

We would recommend the small mesh slider, and it should be making a difference. If not, I have a question or two:

Are you using a direct stow on the slider? How about the indirect stow under the tail pocket? Have you tried rolling the nose? Is the velcro on your tailpocket still gripping well? (Just a stab at perhaps some serious line dump adding to to the problem.)

The marquisette slider should be making those openings much more comfortable. I jumped it in Norway in 2002 and was amazed at the difference of the large mesh and the small mesh sliders, and that was at terminal.

460 learned that the hard way earlier in his career.

460 jumps a standard Vtec Fox and all of our jumps (well, most all) are 10-12 second terminal A jumps. Hard openings haven't been a huge issue withhim and he uses a large mesh slider.

I'm pretty sure he uses direct slider control. He rolls the outer 3 cells and does not wrap the center cell. He just exposes it.
